I used to hear tales that they could not bite underwater; so much for that!

That's what it appears to be for me. Big snake with a bad attitude that is harmless to humans but tough on water creatures. They look very much like a copperhead in coloration.

I was up at Crab Orchard in Illinois in May and I meet a guy at the ramp with some fish and he was showing me some crappie with marks on them " he said look at this somethings been hitting these." I looked at the wound and couldn't really identify it. I mean I have seen them hit by Muskie up at Kinkaid, and I have seen the mark Lamprey leave on the rivers and Kentucky lake, and I have seen sores I contributed to some disease. I figured maybe it was Gar since they have a lot of them there. Anyway...it was one of those trips where the water snakes where trying to get in the boat...I had to beat three different ones back. Once I pulled up the trolling motor to clear some weeds. I didn't pull it all the way in...just up to the surface where it sort of holds if you don't bump it. Anyway...I am kneeling down there pulling the weeds off when I see out of the corner of my eye one had got within about a foot of my hand. So this has me thinking...have the snakes been hitting some of those fish on the bed ? The marks would have been about right I think.

When I use to use stringers and baskets years ago I would pull them up only to find one hanging on. Even had a few find there way in the basket if the lid was sprung a little.
