And then there's salt water, especially offshore, and the boats, electronics, and tackle involved with that.
Not to mention fuel cost to run them, even for 0ne weekend.
I was always told that "for a nickel more you can go first class". The only problem I never had that extra nickel.
Be safe and good luck fishing

Have eaten many crappie caught at Enid on cane poles spider rigging . Does not seem that long ago but it was 1995 when I moved there . ketchup taste the same all over the state also .Can remember fishing one minnow to a pole (Carolina rig, but tight line ) and how we were stunned when we saw a double minnow rig . lol It was like cheating . That was when people actually worked and lakes did not get hammered "all" day "every "day".
Everybody has a preference. If you’re complaining about cost of rods, don’t try to fill up my truck and boat gas tanks! I like my white rods, but I get a break on the price now. I like my ranger boat. And I like my 4 units on my boat. Where does it end? When I can’t afford to do it anymore. My grandfather used to whoop the fish with a 9 ft telescopic jig pole that prob didn’t cost $20.
Fishing isn’t the cheapest addiction I’ve ever had, but boy is it fun.
To each their own, but I haven’t met a fish I couldn’t swing in the boat with those high dollar white rods!

i have 36 jig pole combos from 10' to 16', black rods, white rods, and red rods. if i put all my rod holders on my boat i could fish with 24 rods at once. any technique you wanna do. truth be told could get by fine on a 1/10 of what i got. but i gave up 8 years of my life for my education, i have no family, ive worked hard for thirty years, and i only got one hobby (fishing) so thats where the money goes. but seriously you don't need any of the fancy stuff to have fun and be successful fishing.

I find that better quality products last longer, work better, and cost more. You get what you pay for. Sure the fish don't care, or do they? Especially when they self release?
In the end, it's your money and you have to justify spending it. We all have different life circumstances, incomes, and budgets. If you want to spend $1 or $1,000 dollars on a lure, it's no skin off my back. All the power to you. Enjoy.

In the early 70s we trolled with cane poles,no pole holders-we sat on the poles-,no depth finder, and a 30# hand trolling motor on Lake Washington and caught a lot of fish. Maybe as many as I catch now.
All interesting perspectives. Let's all just hope that chasing a crappie never turns into what chasing a duck has.
