I like the rack! Been trying to come up with something like you have made. I break my rods down and put in rod box, but at lake they get tangled running from spot to spot.

When I'm getting ready at the ramp I unwrap the rods and leave the hooks in the hook holder just above the reel, then place them in the vertical rod holders. The reels fit better if I make the handles point down on the first 7 rods and the handle up on the eighth rod. I tried to make the rack as small as possible to save space and by orienting the handles this way they kind of nest together. Once I get to my first spot I grab the nearest rod with the reel handle pointed up, bait up, put in the fishing rod holder then repeat with the next rod in line. By orienting the reel handles this way they tend to be less of a hassle while getting ready to fish.

When I move on the water I don't wrap the line around the rod like I do for on the road storage, I put the hook in the hook holder just above the reel and put enough tension on the line to keep the line taught. The only time I have had issues is with heavy winds. The poles will bend and may tangle at the tips but it doesn't happen very often. When cruising around with the 25 hp motor I usually don't have any issues at all. If you go with this vertical rod rack it is best to build in such a way that the pipe rests on the deck. This will help with stability and shifting of tube angles. If mounted off the deck the rack will want to pivot and your poles will be slanted. This may not be a bad thing, it may even be more aerodynamic.
