I sometimes keep the marabou real short and still use a Hackel feather if you post this in the Jig tying in the lure making forum you’ll definitely get a lot more response I think
I recently ordered some marabou to tie my jigs with and really like it compared to my old way of tying jigs with hackle feathers. One thing i notice is that the marabou has a slightly bigger profile even when wet compared to my hackle.
considering most of my jigs are tied with hackle, when would one choose marabou over hackle.
should i convert my methods of madness to only marabou? If so why

Yeah it was late an when i realized i posted it here i couldnt figure out how to move it, either way no bigge i was just curious.
Didnt know if their is a special time an place for a hackle jig vs marabou, i tied one with both and like it but idk, it opened too many doors haha
I'm big on hackle, it works well for me...
That being said I've never used marabou.....
Skip ties a lot of marabou jigs for his personals and I'm sure he'll be along shortly... might have some info on times they work best for him or you could pm him...

I originally got all my color selections in just hackle when i started tying crappie jigs. I love the way they swim in the water but all my friends say im wasting time not throwing marabou style jigs. Weell i got me some of that marabou and tied up 4 only to realize it screams crappie food hahah.
But in my bass fishing days i remember the years i spent learning the difference between when to throw a crankbait with a rattle and ones without a rattle and why. Granted this is not a rattle or even close to a crankbait but these suttle differences were the difference between 1st or a zero at times on the tournament trail.
So im left wondering should i retie everything and go marabou? If so when an why?
After looking at the two side by side i think that maybe perhaps possibly the hackle would be better where they want a smaller snack or in clear water finess type situations due to only 2 thin feathers vs a bulk of marabou. An in honesty it probably has more to due with me liking what im throwing vs a difference between the two types haha.
I have no idea why anyone would choose hackle over marabou, unless you just wanted to tie something different.
The only material that can match the action of marabou is rabbit fur.
IMHO ... if you tie with anything other than marabou, rabbit fur, or bucktail, you're tying for yourself, not the fish. (FWIW, there's nothing wrong with tying for yourself.)
