Default minnow trap bait. ( best minnow types)

hi all, any recommendations on bait for my minnow trap? I posted in anther thread but I used cheezits on my first go last weekend ( its all I had. but I was told dog food would work is thre a certain brand?) I heard caught 20 or so between afternoon and dark. then once darkness came I couldn't catch a single minnow even though 1000's were swimming around my green light. is this typical? ( the light and trap location didn't change??) maybe they don't see the bait s good at nght?

also is it safe to assume anything under my dock that I trap will be good to use as bait? my trap had a large assortment of size and color minnows.( hopefully with time I can learn to identify them

my lake is lanier (in GA )
Thanks chimneyman thanked you for this post

A slice or two of white bread is all you need.

Depends on what you are calling "minnows". Those 1000's swimming around your dock light are likely Threadfin or Gizzard Shad, which aren't likely to go into a minnow trap hole, and would have to be caught with a dip net or cast net (but they won't live long after capture).
Pencil shaped "minnows" that tend to stay on/near the surface (above the light) are likely Brook Silversides ... which can be caught with a wire screen net. (cast nets don't have small enough "holes" to keep them from passing thru the netting)

Take a picture of those different size/color minnows that you catch in your trap, and we'll help you identify them.

I use hot dog or hamburger buns spread with peanut butter. The peanut butter leaves a scent trail for the minnows to follow. It really brings them in.
