Okeechobee will be affected by storm surge from the lake itself. The lake is basically a big shallow bowl stretching about 35 mi in any direction.
In the hurricanes of 04 and 06 we lost a large part of our vegetation and the wind and wave action stirred the muck on the lake bottom and made the lake a muddy mess.
The lake elevation 9/8 was 13.66 and the water released has drawn it down a few inches.
Most of our inflow comes from the north down the Kissimmee river basin which starts near Orlando.
The Corps is predicting at least a 3' rise that will take a long while to move through the system as they have to hold the water until the areas on
Either coast deal with their flooding problems.
This old lake has survived many storms and environmental issues and it will this one but it may take a while.
    BE SAFE!!!

My 83 year old uncle has a place in Buckhead Ridge that he lives in during the Winter. He's definitely worried about his house & pontoon but I'm glad he's up here in Kentucky with us. At least he can't be hurt. He will be going back down late next month or early November. Hopefully he still has something to go home to. I'll be coming back down myself next March.

Prayers sent out for all you people effected by the storm. Stay safe .......
