I'm looking to purchase a side imaging and down sonar unit together; any recommendations for budget of @ $750 - $1000?

The Humminbird 800 and 900 Series are showing up brand new in the box well within your budget. These are still very nice and funtional units. In my opinion these units are nicer and more funtional than the Helix units. I have an 898 side image unit that it mounted at the console. Also within your budget are the 7x and 9x SV/DV Garmins in the non chirp versions. These are really nice units and frankly right now Garmin is the buzz word in electronics at the moment. I am very seriously considering switching to Garmin but I am holding out to see if and when they are going to release a 9inch down view unit. Above all though, you need to get what fits your needs and budget.

I'm a lowrance man ,but if I was gonna start over on a budget it would be garmin and humminbird.i have owned humminbird and lowrance and think they both have there good and bad but I think the lowrance usually costs more
