    Default Nickajack 11/19/2015

Hit Nickajack at 9:45 a.m. and left at 2:00 p.m. with 13 crappie.....2 shy of the limit of 15. I am finding the older I get the less I can hang around for those few more hours to get those last fish to limit out......but hey.....13 crappie from Nickajack is a nice haul. The crappie there are very broad shouldered fish. My smallest was just over 11 inches and the largest just over 13 inches....most fish were at the 12 inch mark. They were holding on the bottom in 21 feet of water. I used a Tict Ice Cube 6' 9" Mebaru UL rod to catch all fish.....line used was 2# test braid with an 18 inch leader of 2# test Phantom fluorocarbon leader. The lure was a Bison Trout Magnet either on a 1/64 or 1/24 ounce jig head with a #8 hook. Water was somewhat stained but still had visibility around 2 feet. Catching 12-13 inch slab crappie on 2# test is a lot of fun...life is good!

Letting them light jigs fall 21' sure takes some patience ! Nice job ! Curious, why 2# braid if you're also fishing 2# Flouro ?

Thanks.....I use 2# test Nanofil and put a fluorocarbon leader on because 2# test Nano is about as small as a human hair...LOL.....and it has virtually no abrasion resistance at all. Plus when using the 1/64 ounce jig head I can cast a mile with it. Yep...takes a long time to wait on a 1/64 to get down 21 feet but when you twitch it
up it falls back so slow and IMHO I think the crappie love that slow fall.

I read an article today on micro spoons on micro lines it was a pretty good read. Basically same principle, slow fluttering presentation, caught my attention. The equal weight braid to Flouro is a new one to me. Thanks !

I will use same setup many times for Gills and shell cracker. I also trout fish a lot with same setup. For many years UL fishing was a sideline for me. I spent 21 years fishing the Red Sea...Persian Gulf and caught fish 4-5 days a week in the 20-80 pound range and many times the occasional fish would hit the 100 pound mark. Hung a lot of fish we never got in....too big. But all that time many of us from the south would be talking about catching Gills....crappie. So on returning to the states in 2001 I concentrated more on those two specie....but was still not a true UL angler. About 6 years ago I made the move to true UL fishing and using micro lures....and have never looked back. I have one rig spooled up with some 1# test NanoFil. I just love using micro jigs and lures.

Not trying to high jack the original intent of this post, sorry for straying. UL angling is something I've always had an appreciation for but never ventured into. Many have used some UL tackle on occasion but few would qualify as UL anglers by the same definition as yourself. I've read your posts on the import rods you use and such. All cool stuff. Something I may spend more time practicing in coming years. My next phase will be fly fishing. I've been told it will be my final phase if I ever begin as I won't want to put it down. Perhaps, but that's yet to be seen. This crappie curve has been a blast learning after many years as a novice bass guy. Especially after two plus years completely removed from any type of fishing. Anyway, I always enjoy your posts and the altering perspectives. Keep em coming !

some of us out there love ultra lite tackle . in my case i try to keep the rods pretty light and the line a tad heavier . but to be sure to get the proper presentation to consistently ketch crappie a super slow fall is tantamount in this endeavor in most cases . nice read there sir .

Alphahawk .... closest I've come to owning/using what I consider a true UL, is when I fish with a 6'6" Mitchell Zero Gravity light action rod (high molecular density carbon rod). I have a Zebco Prostaff 2 spinning reel on it & spooled with 4lb test Mr Crappie Super Hi-viz mono (USA made version) and it balances perfectly.

I might have to re-spool it with the Trilene Sensation 2# test I have, and put it back into use !!
