It was about this time last year when I first started to learn to catch crappie. This year like last year the water is all over the place in the woods and the fish are to. I haven't had a good catch since January. Looking forward to next month or two and through next fall when the water falls using what I've learned this past year fishing and following this site to catch some fish.

I'll fish for gills and ears in when the bite is right. And go after catfish a few times a year. But 90% of my fishing is for crappie year round. The spawn is up and down, fronts and wind, here one day gone the next. I catch more fishing vertical jigging in the dog days of summer, or spider rigging fall through the winter. Just how I roll.

Dux we don't have to worry much about someone being on our crappie spots in June, July, and August!!! Our biggest problem then is the pleasure boaters and jet skies. I can't wait to pull those crankbaits with a sweat rag in one hand an a cold bottle of water in the other hand.

You guys who have success post spawn, can you share some tips? Where do they go? Are they not schooled? Best way to catch them?

Charman03; My best tip to post spawn and summer crappie is placing and marking fish habitat. This is the old school way of knowing where to fish when the fishing gets tough. So when ever you get a chance drop some fish habitat (if it is legal) it will help the fish and you will have a honey hole to go too when the fishing gets tough. Build it and they will come.

I do better before and after spawn! They scatter during spawn and trolling seems tough

Yeah, that's me! The Crappie have moved to deeper water up here in PA. The Largemouth Bass have moved into the shallow water Lilly Pads ....... and I am having a ball catching them!

I'll go after the Crappie a bit later. And soon, the "drop shot" deep water Bluegills and the shallow water Fly Rod Bluegills will keep me busy all summer long!

I fish for crappies all year long except through the ice, no way my fatt butt is getting on the ice lol. I especially like fishing for them in the summer while all the bass guys are just going around the lake like a carousel pounding the banks at my small local lake, while I sit about 30-50 feet off shore just trolling along picking up crappies. I am one of the very few in my area that spider rigs, and here in PA we can have 3 rods per person active at one time. So when the wife and I are side by side in the front of the boat with 6 rods out, we get some weird looks, really weird lol.

The main two reasons guys quit in June around here has nothing to do with the fish. It's the heat and the boat/jet ski traffic. Especially for guys like me in a small boat.

I'd much rather be out there in January than July. One of those deep wake boats comes by with the nose up in the air and a kid trying to surf the wake, and it's gonna push some water. For me it's just not fun. It's not fun to bake in the heat and humidity while you're just trying to keep your boat in position and keep water from coming in over the side.

Some guys around here switch to nightstalking about that time.
