Pulling Crankbait questions

Hey guys been doing a little crankbait pulling and catchin a few crappie. But I have a question on how far to throw crankbaits behind boat? Do I throwing them out way behind boat or not? Thanks for all advice.

I go off the specs that bandit puts on their card. I mostly pull bandit 300's. If you do a search on here you can find pics ofthe card. Hope this helps.

you probably want be able to throw them as far as needed. you need some line counter reels or some line that are marked and start at around 30, 40, 50 feet or so behind boat depending on how many poles you have out and start at 1.5 mph and work up til you find them... all trial and error at that point. go further out and speed up til you start catching some.

60-225 ft back for me. Generally I start at around 100 ft back. Shorter early in the year or with deeper running plugs. Then tend to go longer later in the year (or with shallower running plugs).

Linecounter reels (or metered line) makes it easier to be consistent.

This depth chart is based on 10 lb. mono line and a trolling speed of 1.7-1.8 mph. We use line counter reels.

Thanks for all replys. I'm catching the fish is about 10 ft using bandit 300. Guess I don't need to cast far.

ten and a half ft. deep with a 300 bandit is 40 ft. of line out and that is measured from where the line enters the water with the rod in a holder.

Ok G thanks for reply. I'm still learning crankbait pulling. Caught a crappie right at 3lbs first time I ever done it. What's a good line counter that's good for crappie and not real expensive?

We are new to pulling crank baits as well and attended a seminar that Kent Driscoll gave that had some good advice. He advised using 3 rods down each side of the boat; 16' - 12' - 8' to put a 4' spread between the baits. On one side set the baits back 70' - 90' - 110' and on the other side 80' - 100' - 120'. If you start getting bit at any certain distance adjust some of your rods to match. Shortest distance should be set closet to the boat so that when you get bit the fish can be guided over the shorter line(s) and be brought up the back of the boat to make it easier to net. Also you will find it easier to make a turn having this setup avoiding getting lines tangled. Hope this puts a few in the grease for you. I think Kent has some videos on this as well.Good Luck!
