Weedless Crappie Jigs

What is the best way to make a small crappie jig weedless for casting. I am tired of hanging up constantly. LOL I have tried several ways of making it weedless but none of them seemed right. How do you do it? Obviously pictures would help a bunch but I will also take descriptions. Thanks

not really meaning to, but gonna toot my own horn here for a minute. Arkie makes a weedless head, both ball heads and tube insert heads.
they have a twisted wire weed guard. I personally like to un ravel the wire, and have a multi-stand, very light wire weed guard. They also have a double keeper barb to hold your plastics on better.

I use two different styles of weedless jighead ... the "brush" style weedguard & the Y guard style.

Short of purchasing weedless jigheads custom made ... there are two other ways to make a regular jighead weedless. One way is to buy dental rubber bands and slip the rubber band around the jig on your line. Then put it around the line eye of the jig & stretch it to the hook barb & place it behind the barb. When the hook penetrates the fish's mouth, the rubber band will be forced off the barb ... but you shouldn't lose it, as it will still be around the jig/line connection.
The other way is to purchase what is known as "Stick-guards" ... basically a plastic piece that slips over the line eye of the jig & the hook is placed into the end of the plastic piece to make it weedless. I believe Bonehead Tackle makes them, and they're a Crappie.com Member Sponsor.

Personally speaking ... I tried the dental rubber band trick, and the (original) Laker Stickguards, and found them to be less effective than a regular store bought brush style weedless jighead. I went to using Oldham's Weedless Crappie Jigs, but Terry Oldham stopped making the Crappie version several years ago. I had a locally made Y-guard jighead that was long out of production, and sent it to Grousefly. He's been making them for me ever since. And they became so popular with many of the members here, that several of the other custom jig maker members are making them, too.

If ya have the eyes of a hawk and the hands of a surgeon you can drill a small hole in your lead heads and glue in a small piece of heavy 50# mono.

I have some of those that Bobo speaks of. I bought mine from Bass Pro but should have checked with Bobo first. Didn't know he had them.
