Very true ... and even mono cut into the pin on some of the earliest of those spincast reels, after extended use.

Which ever braid, you use, make sure it is not the cheap stuff, that sounds like a train coming when you retrieve. The better lines today are coated and smooth, making casting easy. I like the KastKing 4ply extrema lines.

I'd recommend sticking with a "fused" braid like Fireline, vs. an actual braid like PowerPro. Many reasons, the least of which is noise. And I wouldn't go with anything heavier than 4 lb. test. I use 2# exclusively (open face spinning only) and have never had a failure, even with catching large bass & pike. Of course, if you are fishing heavy brush and snags, that's a different story. JMO.

Braid is like anything else...the newer braids are so much better than older braid.
Power Pro/etc is old Technology that is cheap and still works, but has drawbacks.
Newer braid is alittle more money, but has all the advances of new technology
We have New 12 micro strand braids, that are thinner and stronger than ever, they don't lose color, are perfectly round and smooth so no noise, silicon infused so it won't hold water and sink, and with new fibers that make it abrasion resistant.
Some people are fine with the old Technology...that's why it still sells...but some of us like the benefits of new Technology...both are fine!
