some use those long rods to dip baits in tight to cover. they can reach in where the boat cant go. i mograted back to a 7fter long ago because of control. i found, you will get snagged lots more with the longer rod. sounds like its more of a telescoping cane pole though?

Wrap about 2 rod lengths of line around the line wraps .... then wrap the line around the rod, so that you have one wrap about every two feet of rod length, all the way to the tip eye ... then pull out a length of line equal to the length of the rod .... then run the line thru the eye & tie an overhand knot to secure the line to the eye. This will leave you with ~ 12' of line to fish with, and reserve line to make up for any length lost to breakoffs. Tying the line to the tip eye will keep the rod from excessively bending between the eye & the end line wrap around the rod, when you lift a fish. You could also wrap a piece of elec tape around some of those line wraps around the rod, just to secure them to the rod. That also may help keep the line wraps from becoming a tangled mess, when you collapse the rod for storage or transport.

It is, basically, a "cane pole" ... that has a line storage wrap, & it collapses. I have two similar rods, and that's how I rigged mine. I used them to drop a slipfloat/minnow rig into the open pockets of the Button Bush groves, around stumps & logjams, and shallow cover while fishing Lake Barkley (during the Spring Crappie spawns of the mid to late 1970's). I used 17lb test Cortland braid for a main line, & tied on a 8" leader of 8lb test mono (for the hook/sinker). I had pre-rigged homemade leaders with hook/sinker, so that I could quickly retie in the case of breaking off. I successfully hooked & landed many Crappie, in excess of 2lbs, with these outfits.
