Default Excellent Day in West Texas

    Crappie are just CRAZY.
Lower water temp. this morning at 81 degrees dropping after weeks of 87-90 degrees due to clouds and finally lower temps. this week. The crappie bit like crazy this morning, acting like a Fall bite. Matt Carroll with Jigum Jigs sent some jigs to field test and man they did the job, the 1/64oz. jig in all white was extremely productive tied below a 1/16oz. jig. These are jigs Matt ties on jigheads made by member Jeff Schiller. Tried just the 1/16oz. and again could not get them to bite aggressively like the did the smaller jig. Caught over 80 crappie and kept the Texas limit of 25 with no wall hangers, just solid keepers with several around 1 lb. Had to hit multiple brush piles, but when the right one was located, usually caught 10-15 from one pile before moving on. Depth is odd for August on this lake, fish were caught at 8-10 feet on brush in 12-14 feet of water and were suspended above the brush piles and also caught several around cement on the shady sides. Best brush piles were on flats in bay areas, which is typical of a Fall bite on this west texas lake. Probably just a fluke situation, but it acts like a Fall bite and here it is the middle of August. It is probably just the sudden drop in water temps. Nice to not struggle for a change and have it easy pickens.

Oddity of the day, caught an 8 inch crappie or so, while lifting it to take it off a dad gum GAR, struck the crappie and snapped my 9 foot crappie pole. Gar was not that big, but the FIGHT was on for a short while. Looked like a Chineese Fire Drill trying to hand line the fish around a broken rod. Oh well, it was FUN.

    Good Fishing,

sounds like fun, mud-dabber. haven't checked water temps here, but i would guess it's still over 90. was 95 above the aberdeen lock last week end. did you get any rain? we're in bad need of a good soaker- the kind that makes the water rise about a foot and cool the water down about 10 degrees. glad you had fun.

We unfortunately had rain all around us, but not in the watershed. The lake is 8 feet low and falling about a foot every two weeks now due to evaporation and water needs. Sudden lake temperature drop , Seems to have concentrated the fish over the last week. It was cloudy with highs in low 90's after 40 something over 100 degree days. Figure it was just a Freak day after struggling most of the summer with under fish the majority of the time. We NEED RAIN< RAIN and more rain.

    Regards,
    Ron

Hey Dabber, can you explain just how you tie and rig the set up you used? I'm new to jigging and need to see or hear how they are rigged this way. Thanks, Ferdi aka Fred

Sounds like you had a great day! Can't beat that mess of fish with a stick. My son and I went today here in NC. Water was still 87 degrees! We caught a nice mess, but didn't limit out. I was using minners and the bite was LIGHT. We were in about 20' of water fishing about 10' down. Might have done even better deeper, but was pretty consistent where we were. We, too, need some rain. It's not as bad as it's been, but still.. you can see where the lake is low.
I gotta work this weekend, so how's about you doing a raindance or something. It would be SO cool for it to rain all weekend and be nice fishing all next week!
