I use more 1/8 and 1/4 hand tied jigs in the winter, I like hair jigs while fishing cold water.
Ever since they first came out, no mater what time of year it is, I use Slab Bandits. I have alot of confidence in Robert's baits. I mainly use the 1 3/4" version but will also use the 1 1/4" model if they won't take the larger bait. In colder water (I'm in SE Texas mind you so it doesn't get real cold) the presentation is vertical and I deadstick it, the movement of the boat gives plenty of movement to the jig IMO. I will also use a hand tied bait or a tube jig, but have not noticed either of those baits ever out producing a Slab Bandit.

I do have a selection of some slab bandits will dig them out. I think the colors I have are 1 1/4 inch in length perfect on 1/32 jigs I have.
Something else I have noticed since the temps have dropped quite a bit in last few weeks it seems that the fish are hitting the best around noon where as a few weeks ago I was doing pretty good most of the day, early to late. I guess the fish might just be a little more active at warmer part of day, never really thought about it. I usually just go when I have the time.
In cold water crappie lose thier ability to digest and processing food gets harder. Thier metabolism slows down and they go into a trance like state and lay around all day and do nothing. Small is good because they can digest small, i use small minnows when i do use them. Small can produce big fish in the winter.
right now nothing's working with a full Moon. who else fish's by the Moon
