I tried them on my fly rod but they twisted the hang out of my tippet. They spin as you strip them in and it really twisted my line. Looked good though.

They're called spinning flies. Light enough to fish with a fly rod, or trolled with a spinning rod, or behind pop gear. I can't help but think they'd be the cat's meow for Crappies, Bluegills or Perch.
Where you go is less important than how you take the steps.
But don't forget the Roadrunners

Mark 1:17 ...I will make you fishers of men
You may find these swivels to be just the ticket. Not only do they disappear in the water, but the water actually helps to lubricate them. I'm thinking they would help keep your tippet from twisting if you choose to use a fly rod. They are very small for the strength used.

You can also hook them behind a float a few feet to add casting distance. Also works good for tiny flies. Gills slam em.
Creativity is just intelligence fooling around
I've never seen them before, what are they?

They are called Spinning Flies. They've been around since the 40's or 50's. Look here.
