Default tired of ethanol gas problems? go propane.

    LEHR - Environmentally Friendly Technology

while in a dr's office this morning i picked up a boating magazine. didn't even look or remember the name of it and started thumbing through it killing time and came across an article about a new company that has started making outboard motors that run on propane. this may be old news to all of you but having led a sheltered life it's the first time i've ever heard of it. they have been making yard machines for a while. the article said they plan to make outboards up to 175 hp. seemed a little high to me but said it compared to regular outboard prices. it will also run with a bigger tank with a hose or with the small cylinders you buy at walmart.

    magazine article:

I used to deliver propane, most of our bobtails ran on it. Burns verrrry clean. Took one of the trucks to get emissions checked, they just slapped the sticker on the windshield. Was at a place that builds lp trucks, they got in an old one, rust bucket. Tore the engine down, spotless. A lot of countries run lp/ or natural gas in cars, trucks, busses. USA is way behind the curve.

Propane for engines is what many in the business call "The New Diesel Fuel" Many large haul cross country truck firms are switching to propane engines. Flying J truck stops are installing propane or LNG refueling pumps. Also many garbage truck fleets, school bus companies and the like are switching engines over to LNG. Why one company is now building a LNG engine to replace diesel locomotive engines, they are also in the process of design& build a tender car (like the old coal tender cars) to fuel the new LNG engines. Several of these truck firms are reporting 10 to 20% saving on fuel costs. Doesn't take long to recoup saving on a new truck at 20% fuel reduction costs every year not counting the fact that the new engines will have at least a double lifetime an more. Look up a company called westport innovations- WPRT

i have a friend, yes i have one friend, here that owns the local l.p. gas place. i talked to him a while back about him changing his delivery trucks over to propane motors. i'm sure it would take a while to re-coup the cost but i think in the long run he would come out ahead. and yes, i can find non-ethanol gas. i just posted this because i've led a sheltered life and never heard of propane outboard motors. back in the 60's some farmers had propane pickups. they didn't have quite the power of regular gas engine pickups but like jax, above, said their motors lasted a lot longer. and propane tractors of old just keep on going.
