Default Question For Guys that have or have had Costa Del Mar

I am going to get another pair of sunglasses and have been looking at these for a good while now. There is a huge difference in the kind of lenses you choose and their price so please offer some good info on what you know about these.

First looking at the Triple Tail & Riomar...does anyone have another I should look at?

Next I see the lenses....CR being lowest cost, then Costa 400 Glass then Costa 580 Glass. Anyone have either of the Glass models and if so anyone have the 580's? Please tell me what you know.

It seems that the extra width on the Riomar will help block the sun from the side, now anyone know if this makes any difference at all or no?

Last is there another selection I should be looking at even a different brand, but mostly talking about this brand.

    Any help is appreciated,

Skip, you can spend about as much as you want on glasses, and I'm sure there is as much difference in them as there is in price. I'm not a hi-tech kinda guy, and as rough on my gear as I am, I find the fishgilz (sp) do a good job for me. Maybe not the best out there, but affordable enough so that when I need to replace them, it's not a second mortgage or first born male child for calateral. My .02.

I am not sure yet what I am going to do, but the life time warranty is something to think about with the Costa's. Then there is the scratch Proof Lenses that also are pretty nice thing.

I appreciate your choice and will sure give them a good hard look too.

I will second the Fishgillz. They are great glasses for the money. They are very lite and they float.

I tried costa sunglasses and they distorted my vision . it is best to try on and go outside if they will let you. I ended up with wileyx. Just my vision i guess.

Skip I have two pair of the Costa Del Mar glasses one pair I bought 6 years ago and the nose piece finally wore out I just sent them back and they replaced it and they look like new. I just bought a pair of the Permit style glasses for fishing this spring and I got them with the glass lense. It is incrediable the difference it makes as far as the clarity and the way they cut glare. I also bought a pair of the Fishgillz glasses this spring and needless to say they just don't compare to the costas IMHO.

I've got 3 pairs, including the Triple Tail; I don't find side glare to be a problem with the TT's because the side arms are pretty wide. I've always had the CR-39's because glass is heavier and I don't like the weight after 12 hours plus on the water. Never had a problem with distortion, but that could be me. I've had the ambers and the grey lenses. Amber is better if you fish alot of underwater structure, because it brings out the shadows better (better contrast). On the other hand, grey is better for showing the actual color of things--the amber will give everything a brown tint and sometimes the water looks muddier than it is.

The Costa's last forever. Finally lost a pair after 15 years+ --all my fault, as I somehow caught the strap with my hand while leaning over a dock tying up a boat and actually pulled them off my face!! I wash them with plain liquid hand soap and water at the end of the day (never, ever a dry rub during the day--although it's tempting ) and dry them with a paper towel (make sure it doesn't have wood fibers in the towel--better off with a soft cotton cloth if you're not sure.)

    My two cents.

Thanks guys, went on ebay as someone told me about getting a good price on these and sure enough I saved a little over $100.00 and got the 580's.

Had one guy tell me the difference in the CR, 400 & 580 like this....Said the CR = B&W TV, the 400 = Color TV and the 580's were like Color HDTV, LOL!

    Thanks everyone,

Skip, I bought my first pr of Costa's at a marina in 1979. Bought 2 more since. They are quality glasses. Cut glare by a bunch. You will enjoy them.

    Skip,
580 best glass I've ever had. I have both the yellow lens and green mirror. The yellow is great early and late while the green mirror is best in full sun.
