    Default UGLY STICK Crappie Rod

Oh man! Do I love these poles. They have the toughest tip of ANY crappie pole I have used PLUS they come with a 5 or is it 7 year warranty. If the tip "fails" just send it back with like $6 bucks and they send a new one (I would guess).

Got the 9 footers, 2 piece. stout rods...Already landed some fish close to 2 1/2 pounds from about 10 foot deep and they have some backbone to them. I can't wait to use them during the spawn.

I have MANY BnM poles (heck they're a Mississippi Company and I live in Mississippi) but all of the tips have broken at some point in time, usually sooner than later. The tips are hollow on the BnM whereas the Ugly Stik has that clear solid tip. I love them. Gave $35 each from cabelas. I Still use my BnM poles in 12 foot length when I need to get deep but those poles are now my second choice if the fish are 12 foot or less.

i have ten of the nine footers and im like you, i love em.....for drifting, trolling and nightstalkin they are my choice. if i hook into a bass or a thug i never worry about the rod failing as ive NEVER broken a ugly stick while fishing. I did break several once cause a door got slammed on em and shakespeare replaced em at no charge.

I bought a 5 foot UL Ugly Stik for my cast and retrieve fishing and it's marvelous. We'll be getting more of them in various sizes, I'm sure. - Roberta

I knew for years that the Shakesphere rod's were the BEST. As for their line...IT SUX. But THe Ugly Stick, made by Shakesphere is one of the best 'rods" on the market. The bigger sticks are good to. I have a stand up model (I recall it was like $200 I think) with roller guides for Yellow Fin Tuna...Rated for like 50+ pound test.

I've seen several heavy duty fly rods turned into crappie poles, but I like some play to the pole so I can have a little fun with the fishes.

Bought me a st. croix ul 5'6" for $60. and gave my ugly sticks away. For feel and weight, they are far more superior. They have excellent backbone too. You have to pick one up and put your favorite reel on it to see what i mean. Gander Mt carries a good supply of them. As a matter of fact, they carry both makes of rods. Compare the feel of them at the store. I've had mine for 4 seasons now.

I have both St Croix and Ugly Stick and the 4'6" Ugly Stick does not have enough backbone for me, it bends all the way back to the handle when loaded up with a fish. But the price is good at $27.00 from Wally World.

My St Croix 5' is an awesome little rod and worth the extra money, in my opinion.

I'm not talking anything about poles that are 5 feet ULTRALIGHT rods and made for casting. i like to vertically jigfish and if the fish are deep it's kinda hard casting from an ultrlight tring to get th ig down 15 feet.

Ive not done any jiggin with the 9 footers sac, but for every other purpose i use em for ive found nothing that can compete with em. i have used the shorter ugly stick rods for jiggin and felt they was too soft tipped for feeling the small tap that indicates a bite. however you can watch the rod tips and see the bite, even if you dont feel it. I used to take a 2 piece ultralite ugly, cut it down to about 3 ft by removing a piece just ahead of the handle, and taking the tip section and sliding it into the handle and epoxoying it in place and have an excelent slingshot rod or one that could be used for ice fishing. when i had the small boat i wanted my baits in the light next to the boat and cause the holders was mounted on the rail i wanted short rods so i cut em off to make em shorter. this was years ago before ugly sticks come in the ultra short versions. they worked great like that. when i got the sea ark and moved the holders in on the rod boxes, I needed the extra lenght so i quit using the shorter rods and went back to the regular ultralites uncut. i have a graphite red berkley ($20.00 at walmart) id use if i was using jigs cause of the sensitivity. most longer lightweight graphites is gonna work fine in the same circumstances, using 4 or 6 lb line---but they wont take the abuse the uglies take and the small graphite tips, well they gonna go unless you use care in handling and fishing em. if i hook a thug or a bass, i worry more about the line or reel failing more than i do the rod. plus they are affordable if you need to set up a spider rig or do a trollin setup. when i spend 30 bucks for a rod, id like for it to be around awhile. I think thats why i got so many uglies, cause i have NEVER broken one while fishing. they dont wear out. the only time ive ever had a problem not having one to use anymore is if i droped it over the side, and i have done that a few times since i started usin em after shakespeare started making em. In my opinion, (and im not meaning to step on anyones toes over the rods they use) for the price, you can do a whole lot worse than the 9 foot ugly stick crappie rods, but you can't do any better..

Default So much depends on how you fish, doesn't it?

Besides cast and retrieve for crappie, we frequently fish for bluegill at a lake with tons of flooded trees. We tie up to a clump and slowly feed a small fly or hook with waxies down through the branches to a 12 or 15 foot depth. I never take my fingers off the line and can feel the lightest tap. someitmes Doug takes his short ice rod since it's less cumbersome in the branches.- Roberta

I can tell you from 1st hand experience that the ugly stick works good for jigging (9')we use to take them to florida and fish thru the grass. If you didn't catch a fish you had to snatch the jig out of the trash I've broken a many'a pole down there. but I've never last a ugly-stick. Only rod that lasted as long is by browning jigg'n pole did.

If they would make ugly-sticks in 12-16' rods for spider rigging and trolling I would not use anything else. Maybe we could get enough folks to email them or get them to consider making longer ones I'd be willing to test them for'em.
    If you don't get hung every-once-n-a-while you ain't jigg'n it right..:D
