Transducer suction cups

I've always used transducers mounted to my boat and right now I have one transducer that got ripped off the boat and I'm adding another depth finder to the boat. I was wondering if the suction cup mounting brackets work or do they pop off regularly? I've a 17ft alum boat and am going to fix them both up with the cups for better placement-if they work. Thanks.

thinking about one to shoot under docks . but got a side finder now . got one on a troling motor i think i will shoot to the side with it . the cup kind will stay unless you hit somwthing . there is a cord attached to keep from loosing it

While we are on the subject of transducers I have a question.
I have both types of transducers, the conventional type and the trolling motor puck type.
Do any of you that have used both types find a difference in the readings.
I fish in water that is never more than 15' deep. I find that the conventional type transducer gives me a better reading than the puck type. I think maybe it is becuase the the puck type shoots straight down on top of the structure as you go over it where as the conventional gets the structure from the side as you approach it.
Is this just my imagination or do others feel a difference.

I have the suction transducer that I used to use on a ALum Boat . I always had trouble with it staying on. However I beleive it was because of the paint on the boat. I just put it on my ALum boat that I have now and put Latex Caulk in the suction of it and pressed it in place. It's holding good. And if I decide to move it it shouldn't be a problem getting it off.

I tore off the one that came with my boat and mounted another depth finder and I ended up putting it too far down and even though it worked good, it would flip up when running the big motor and I had to reset it when I stopped. I'm wanting to get both as far from the motor as I can so they will work properly. Deacon; I had one on my trolling motor, but mine didn't work very good, so I took it off. It might have just been a cheap one, I'm not sure. I plan on putting another one on it eventually, but right now I'm just going to run the 2 on the back. They work if I can keep transducers on them.

With both on the back, you may have an interference problem if you use both at the same time. Especially if they both operate at the same freq.

Would it matter if the tranducers were on opposite sides of the boat? I'll probably be using them one at a time anyway cause one is on the console so I can see it while I'm motoring and I have the other on the front so I can see it while fishing, but I might have them both on sometimes (in a hurry to get to the front of the boat and fish!! :D ). I have a problem with interference, when two units are on at the same time ... even if they are at opposite ends of the boat. Supposedly, you can get interference from - passing or nearby boats, units of the same frequency or even brand, and from the other electrical apparatus' on the boat (big motor, trolling motor, pumps). The placement of the power cords has been mentioned as a possible cause, in some cases ... but, that was in the past - maybe the cords are better shielded, these days. It was always mentioned, that running the power cords away from the others, was a help in reducing interference ... but, the dealer mechanics always seemed to run them along side the others, when "prepping/setting up" the boat. Never could figure out why they did that ... unless it was just "easier" for them to do it that way.
It's always a good idea to "test" the unit, with the other electrical devices running, BEFORE you mount a new unit. If no interference occurs, then you're good to go. But, if you do have a problem ... then you have a choice to make - return the unit & purchase a different one, or just remember to turn one unit off, before turning the other one on.
Having two transducers on the back of the boat, and running at the same time ... even if they don't cause "interference" ... may overlap, in their cone angle coverage, and give you false readings. A swivel mount, and one unit & transducer, will give you the same benefit as two seperate units ... if you have them both reading at the same end of the boat. The only positive, in that scenario, is having a unit close by (easier to read, and you don't have to turn around to see a console mounted one)
They do make "switch boxes" ... where you can mount one transducer, and run two units off of it (or two transducers/one unit). But, they aren't cheap, and they only work with specific brands. You may also have to purchase "connector cables", to match up the plugs to the switch box. And they ain't cheap, either :rolleyes:

Thanks CP and IBNFSHN for the info. I guess I'll have to make sure I cut off the one at the console before I get up to go to the front. One's an Eagle and the other a Hummingbird, so if they make a splitter for them, I probably couldn't afford it anyway. I could start doing like I had to do when all I fished out of was a 12ft alum boat. Let out alot of line or pick up the UL and try to hang something and then throw out a buoy!! Maybe oneday I'll catch up with some of the gadgets. :rolleyes:

i had a probablem with interfearance on my finder from trolling motor and change to cranking battery from the troling battery .it was acting up when running troling motor
