Ken, ever try using a baitpump to fill your tubes? I find that i get many more crappies as it lasts a lot longer than a single nibble thats exposed. Dont knock it til you try it.
I've been trying to answer your questions on my other sight will get to it after this sight. My tubes are Lit"l Huster Crappie Tubes. Southern Pro Tackle. Inc. 1.5in.LH38-25. Chart.SPK One is Pepper and ones is Salt as pictured. Hooks ARKE RTlH-132 Bloodline-Jig Heads-10pack 1/32 oz and 1/16oz. The Char. Red Head is Squirmin Squirt from bass pro shop. Tubes all are short 1.5in. and are hollow. The crappie niblets in whike Bye Berkley. This is what I fish with at any given time under a slip bobber. Your right...a Bait Pump and crappie nibbles is the only way to go when fishing tube jigs.
I have spent most my life fishing........the rest I wasted.

Old Ship uses a "modified" Kentucky rig to get his jigs down deep.

I gave up on the bait pump. Never could get the minner to be still enough so I could shoot the juice up its rectum.:o
