Heard that all my life....I really believe that when that happens, the fish have just left the area, not quit biting...sometimes when I was tied up in one spot watching my fish finder and not catching any and not seeing any on the screen, then when fish started showing up on my screen, all of a sudden, I would be catching till my screen went blank, and the biting stopped...so I had to conclude that they didn't stop biting, they just moved on....J B Salter once told me, "sac a lait are always biting, just got to find them".....

Same here, they'd swim up and just look at it for a second and then swim off. Changed 4 or 5 colors, nibble or no nibble. FRUSTRATING!!!!
