You can launch in the park or at the spillway. Shiners available at the spillway. Lots of shallow fingers to look for spawning fish. I usually fish it early March and find fish in the deep flooded timber out from the levee.
We gonna finally get our inaugural trip to the #1 rated Crappie Lake in Louisiana and we plan to pull some slabs outa Caney Creek. Been trying to get there for 3 years. Tornadoes and China Virus kept us out. Anybody out there got any insight on how best to fish for Crappies out of Jimmie Davis Campground? We'll be there 1st week of April and need to start by finding minnows and our way to the launch. Now I imagine that's about as clear cut a Dogris as they'll let into the state. Tell me something mister-

That's what I'm talking about.
THNX Spartan in Overalls!
If you're making the trip all the way from Michigan, the slabs must be awesome.

This is my biggest from Caney, my first 2 pounder. Got him up tight in some buck brush. My son lives 30 minutes from Caney so I get to fish it when I head south to visit.
Also fish D'arbonne a lot.

I was gonna say the same thing, shiners at the launch at the spillway. Jan and early Feb fish deep around the dam, you will see the boats.

That's a nice looking Crappie Spartan. Looking at that got me wanting to get the grease hot. We had Crappie Camp up on Sardis Lake every spring for over 20 years and caught some slabs like that. Sardis is a huge water retention lake near Oxford, MS and it hold's some dandy's like that. Problem with that lake though is that it is so wide open that when the wind blows it's like being on the open sea. Not a lot of fingers and hidden nooks where you can get out of the wind and fish. If you do manage to get up into one of the bays out of the wind there would be everybody on the lake trying to do the same thing. Don't get me wrong, I love Mother Nature and am not complaining. Just looking forward to trying something different. Half of my clan comes out of LA anyway so we're thinking Caney Creek will be our new traditional Crappie Camp. The excitement of stepping out into something new is captivating us. Your pics are fueling it.
