They don't have to be in he house, but should be in a building.

They'll be be fine outside. I've seen them swimming in a bucket that was frozen over on top.

I have had some (in the net), in the bucket, that were still swimming around. This happened at one of the early Toledo Bend gatherings that we had 4" of snow at! Couldn't believe how hardy they were! I think as long as it is a slow cool down, you are ok. If you dump them in a container that is just a few degrees different, it will kill them!

I actually froze some in Tn. They started swimming when the ice melted. After keeping them for 3 weeks in my garage and only losing 4, I dumped them in my neighbor's pond. They thrive in cold water.

They like cold. They hate hot. Bubbles keep them good to mid 20s

    great comments,
sometimes when its cold enough I just keep an icechest with a few inches of water and throw in my left overs to keep.
They will last for weeks unless it warms to much.

I used to keep minnows in an old style cast iron bathtub. Kept about 6 inches of water in it with 3 pounds of shiners. Have seen it with 3 inches of ice on it and the shiners were happy as could be under it.
