Mermentau Stink Water
Quick trip to Mermentau River for a sad stinky boat ride. Launched in town of L.A. into a mess of floating fish and stink water. Rode a few miles down the river and the smell and black water was all the way down. Didn't go quite to Grand Lake before turning back. Never a bite not even a garfish. At least there were no more dead fish after leaving the landing so that's a good sign. Probably a couple of weeks before I'll try that again. Wonder what the water looks like at Dubisson? At least I got away from the house for a while and that felt good.

Good to hear u got out. I checked the water on da Ticfaw public boat launch Thursday afternoon and it was nothing but black water. Heard there were some fish killed. Though I have not seen any. I'm sure the Lower Amite and Blind river water is dead too.

Bayou Courtableau runs behind my house, water is black and when the wind blows u can smell the stench. I’ve lived here 5 years, never saw the bayou get like this....It’s usually a reddish brown

Lack of oxygen in the water Twenty. On the tidal rivers it usually is cause by the storm surge into the swamp and falls quickly bring that water from the swamp with little or no oxygen into the river. Also a surge can bring up decay from the bottom of water body and turn it over and it takes the oxygen out of it.

I'm just going to add that the black color comes from the leaves in the water similar to when you make iced tea. It can also come from marsh grass rotting or even rice stubble. You can have low oxygen water that's not black but it's rare to have black water that's not low oxygen
