    Default Sacalait @ Chicot

How many of you fish for sacalait @ Chicot near Ville Platte? I remember my Grandpa telling stories about fishing there when the road to the lake from Oberlln to Ville Platte and Mamou were all pea gravel roads. Catching 2-3 ice chest of 3-4 lb. sacalait wascommon and always expected… that's not counting a sack or 2 of bull frogs, a small gator and a bagging a coon or 2 over night. There were only a few cabins at Chicot back then. If it swam, crawled or climbed a tree it was fair game to catch, kill and eat. If you kill it, you eat it. This was way back in the 1940’sand 50’s. Grandpa was a meat hunter and said the fishing trip was over when theice chest were full.
    Always enjoyed those old stories.

Those days of your grandfather are long over. LOL. It's still a beautiful lake. Bass fishing is still pretty good. They have some monsters in there. Crappie fishing is usually good in March and April, but tough after that. Lots of grass takes over. A friend went Saturday. did not catch a single crappie, but did catch a 6 lb bass on a crappie jig. As soon as it warms up just a little bit more, I'll be out there.

When I was a kid, I used to walk 7 miles to school, 6 days a week in a foot off snow. Up hill both ways.
    Tell'em I'll be there.

I've been fishing Chicot for 75 years. In the past, it was a very productive lake but has become a real challenge in recent years.

If I was a newbie, I would try out of the North landing in the trees across from the dam. When the water warms up they will be spawning in the shallows there. You just have to find the spot. Good luck.

You may want to try Miller's Lake. It's not far from you and should be getting really good as soon as the water warms a little.

Sounds like your grandfather was like mine. Wouldn't let the truth get in the way of a good story. Ice chest full of 3-4 lb. crappie. LOL
