Thread: Salt water fishing inshore

Depends on what you have and what fish you’ll be targeting but I’d go spend a few bucks and get the right baits.

I’ve heard of people catching trout and redfish on spinner baits and some top water bass baits. Not sure if you’d have any luck with tube jigs. Someone else might have a different opinion but I’ve never tried it.

I buy live bait when we go down to the coast. If they’re really biting good artificial will work. Shrimp (live when available or artificial) and cocahoe minnows (live or artificial) work best. Shrimp in the hot months. Minnows in the cooler months. Both under a popping cork such as the Cajun Thunder and a red, white, or yellow jig head work best for me most of the time but fishing on the bottom produces at times also.

Yes it does

We always buy live bait when we fish saltwater. I have caught redfish on a top water lure that looked like a bass lure but a bit larger. Personally if I was going to do it a few dollars on a few lures that I wouldn't use but once a year is worth it.

I fish conventional tackle and fly fish in salt water. I tie my own flies, and for saltwater, I try to use the color combinations that work in conventional tackle. Those are purple/chartreuse, watermelon(dark green)/chartreuse, black/chartreuse, glow or glow chartreuse. The glow is the same color as what I have seen for crappie jigs, and would probably work well, since it imitates a shrimp. I have a friend who guides out of Shell Beach area, and he is/was a member here. He uses a crappie rod 12-14' long with a spinning reel and slip cork and live shrimp. Really works good around rigs etc, because it allows you to gently cast the shrimp without slinging it off. Also with the slip cork, you can let the shrimp down slowly to explore different depths. Probably should up the line strength a bit, and use a bigger stronger hook. All that said, you could get a few H & H jigs and tails in colors 1, 2 and 4, and 2 popping corks at Academy etc for less than $20, and use a spinning rig. Just be sure and thoroughly wash your reel when you get home and lube it. Then wash it again in 3 days to a week later. Good luck!!

I have done well with bass lures fishing for red fish in the shallows (less than a ft of water)....with the weather cooling you can catch red fish on top water until it decides to get cold (generally December down on the coast)
spinner baits fairly well if the fish are active, a very shallow running crank bait, and ZOOM baits make a craw fish that people use Texas rigged to catch red fish and bass down below New Orleans where there is a bit more vegetation in the water.
I am not sure where you generally launch but I have a Dozen spots between Leeville, Port Fourchon and Grand Isle ill give you if you send me a PM.
Fourchon has a public launch, Leeville built a new one less than 3 years ago and Grand Isle has a handful scatter along the island.

They are not scared to choke down a 4" swimbait on a jig head or a 4" top water....they act very much like a post spawn bass in my opinion just cruising around constantly looking for shrimp, crabs, or minnows to eat.

I always bring some gulp shrimp in new penney color (4"). The red fish love those! Now if you are more after specks, I use sand eel jrs in Black magic, glow/chrt or LSU colors. Live and FRESH bait also works very well.

Be advised, the hardware on ur freshwater lures will rust if u don't rinse afterwards
