Pawpaw, don't want to get too political here but this just goes to show you how much the "People" can get done when you get the government out of the way!
A great big THANKS to the local law enforcement for allowing the local and outsiders to help the victims. As sad a situation as it was, it was made better by allowing people to help one another. I and many other remember the scenes after hurricane Katrina of thousands of people stranded on overpasses and roof tops in New Orleans for days. The Cajun Navy was ready and able to aid to the fullest but law enforcement stop the launching of all boats that could have helped. Boats were lined up on I-10 for miles coming to the rescue of the stranded people and they were stopped cold. Without the influx of people into the city, what followed was looting and destruction of property and complete chaos. Again I want to commend the law enforcement officials who allowed people to help one another the way it should be. Government can't do it all we must fend for ourselves and out neighbors.
This makes me think back to hurricane Betsy in 1965 when a friend and I paddled a small boat over five miles through and over New Orleans to rescue his aunt who had been stuck in her attic for 7 days. Water had come up to just touching the ceiling in the house and when we arrived the water was still at waist level in the house and about 7 foot in the yard. Never have I seen anyone so happy to see another person. She was on her last can of food and had been out of water for days.
The biggest THANKS go out to the Cajun Navy.

Here is a link to a video taken near Baton Rouge. Besides the flooding, it shows how many of the Cajun Navy were on duty.

Paw-Paw the Cajun Navy was all over Face Book. Some places they were turned away. Law Enforcement was afraid they would have to rescue rescuers was the excuse they gave. Law Enforcement should understand that most boaters willing to help were driving boats before they could walk and have gone catfishing in currents just as strong and know how to operate a boat better than 90% of what they call qualified. The ones turned away just went somewhere else helped where the were allowed. There was a group of 20 boats that kept getting turned away. I admire those guys they never gave up. They were on the phone calling local governments and finally were allowed to help. My hat is off to them. Personally I am waiting for the water to recede and go help where ever I can.
Dwayne that's not getting political, that is just fact.

That's the truth Gene. South of here in the surrounding towns, the Cajun Navy is doing the same thing. But, the national guard, sheriff offices, and fire departments are helping folks offload and load their boats. Can't get my boat out to help and the pirogue is staying here.

I run mud boats with most of these guys, have been for a long time!
I myself have done rescue/recovery with my mud boat up here earlier this year. Driving a boat, on step, down the hwy, over bridges between guard rails!!!
Unfortunately, the was a black spot! Some clown set up a go fund me account in the name of the Cajun Navy, for "boat repairs"!!'
I know for a fact, not one guy in the real Cajun Navy has ever asked for boat repairs! Other guys in our group that's too far to help, have been sending parts to them, free of charge!!!
Just want to set a few things straight!

We were turned away in Crowley. And st.martain parish. We were able to work with Lafayette. Youngsville. Maurice million and surrounding areas. What we had to do with st. Martin was break the law and just go around road closed signs and dock the boat and take off. I also did recovery mission with wlf. Took over 60 people out a trailer park. That were at stuck there over 12 hours. I would say that the crew I worked with brought over 500 people to safety
