FYI when purchasing #4 Emerald Shiners at the hatchery here for my tank a pound has roughly 250 in it. I rarely purchase #6 as I get too much catfish sized minnows with them. Usually 4 pounds of #4's lasts me a season when shiners are needed. On the coast here in Mississippi jigs have been working so well up to now I just filled my tanks up with water yesterday.

My local shop sells to me for a pretty good discount do to the fact that I buy enough to keep me supplied for a few weeks.

I have 3 local places and they’re all around 2.25 a doz. The count depends on the dipper. I try to get my minnows the night before because the daughter of the owner works 4-8 and I don’t think she counts at all. When the dad is working I’ll get a can of pop and move to the next store haha

The minnow graders used at minnow farms work great . Size # 4 should be close to 4 lb per thousand . The size #6 should be 6 lbs per thousand . Simple to under stand how many per pound . Divide 1000 by size # for a good estimate . 1000 divided by 4 would be 250 minnows average per pound .

Fantastic post NIMROD! I never understood the numbering system. I only buy #4's.

It's a better value to get them by the pound

I need to get the tank ready for when it cools down enough to keep them. Sure is nice to grab some and go fishing instead of finding who has minnows
