    Default Louisiana Swamp Worms

Looking to raise some Louisiana Swamp worms for bait, but had a couple of questions about them.
Are they good composters, as well as good bait? Any specific restrictions on scraps fed to them?
Also, was thinking of raising them in a Worm Farm 360 container on my screened in porch. Should I start off with just a pound of worms for this size container? Any special needs for bedding?
    Thanks

I have attempted to raise LSW and they have to have perfect conditions in order to grow and reproduce. You need composted horse manure for bedding. I would suggest that you grow European nightcrawlers instead. I've been there and done that and failed. I am trying to save you some heartache. You can google "raising worms for bait" which is a private group, and ask about LSW. I'm a member and I think you will change your mind.

I raised them for several years. Although I loved them as bait, this has turned out to be a pretty weak strain. When it gets cooler, they flat out stop breeding. While the red wigglers continue to breed. Due to the fickle nature of this worm I can no longer recommend them. They are very close in size to a red wiggler, so it's hard to justify the trouble for a worm that isn't too different from a red wiggler...

That said, if you keep them in a climate controlled area and raise them you will get ok results. But like I said, they are super fickle and will stop breeding while the reds keep on producing offspring.
Commercial worm farmer, but presently sold out until further notice.
