I started with 2000, so I could also fish with them too.

I was told to wet a paper towel , wring out as much as possible and spread across the top .By the time I realized there was mold in my trays the worms were dead . If using wheat bran for bedding they eat it . I have been told they will eat their own for moisture not sure . (Have found no partial worms ) I add a tray of 50 any time I need more . There are times I have thousands of bugs .

I keep everything in the same uncovered container.I add, two small folded in half hand towels. These hand towels seem to only attract the largest mealworms inside them.I would probably get mold too from the water mistings I give them, if it wasn't for fact that their bin is right next to the central a/c intake vent which is constantly pulling in air .

Moisture is a mealworm killer. As long as there is pleanty of bedding/food ( bran or oats ) a halved potato is adequate for moisture and my preferred method, but carrots are good also.If the worms begin giving off an ammonia odor, the bedding has become too saturated and needs be replaced.placing a couple cardboard egg cartons opened and upside down on top the bedding will give the worms and beetles a secure ,dark location( they love it ) plus it makes it easier to gather worms for fishing.
