Up here in North Central Pa we have been paying about 2 bucks a dozen. Maybe a little more, depending on where you go.

You know- a few weeks ago I posted that we were paying 2 bucks a dozen for minnows up here in North Central Pa. And I just got some over the weekend for that price.

But the other day I stopped into a bait shop in selinsgrove pa. Asked for 2 doz fatheads. He put them in my bucket and rang me up and the bill came to $8.56. Ouch ! I guess I should have asked the price beforehand.

Default Just wait till the summer gets hot and watch what happens

If you think the cost of live minnows is high today, June 1, 2002, consider how much the cost of minnows will increases as summer progressively gets hotter every day for the next 3.5 months.

Add in the additional cost of all those $0.25 - $0.30 minnows that will die or get to sloppy to fish with, catch the red-nose and become ineffective and live bait, all this will increases your total cost of those live minnows we buy. Most fishermen don’t add in the additional cost of "lost bait," the summer bait kill and hundreds of dead and dying minnows experienced over the next 3.5 months that we paid top dollar for.

Example: Buy 12 live minnows for $6 and 6 minnows die/become non-fishable - you have actually paid $1.00 each for those 6 minnows you bought that are actually fishable. And the price for each dozen minnows you purchased has actually doubled.

I can see the cost of live minnows increasing up to $0.50 each or $6.00 / dozen or maybe more this summer at some bait shops when the weather really gets hot and the fishing is good in July-August.

Because the cost of minnows is increasing, the cost of those fresh fish fillets we catch shall increase substantially too this summer like what we are paying for ground chuck, fat-back, pig feet and potatoes at the grocery stores these days.

How many of you are old enough to remember those good old days when live minnows were $0.50 / dozen at bait shops?

Minnows are classified as #4 (small), #6 (medium), & #8 (large) then the larger ones are called bass or catfish minnows. A thousand #4 weighs 4 pounds, a thousand
#6 weighs 6 pounds and so on. (by weight)
    Tell'em I'll be there.

A dozen minnows for $6? Dang. I’d just be a jig fisherman. I can get a pound of mediums for $6

$2.25 a dozen for shiners in Grove Okla. and got hooked once for $8 a dozen in Enid Okla. I now ask the price before i hand them the bucket.
I dug a small pond that holds 8' of water and raise my own fatheads and shiners in NW Oklahoma, closest minnows for sale are a 70 mile round trip for the $8 minnows where I live.
