If the initial fish die, and they very well might, leave them in there. They will cause ammonia to spike, nitrites, then nitrates...ect.

personally I'd throw a frozen shrimp or something in there and let it decay. It's a little more humane and it introduces the same stuff.

You can also just put fish food in it to help it cycle. Just check the water quality for the above mentioned items and you will know when the tank has cycled

I went with the 70 gal Rubbermaid tank. Did you seal the port for drain plug and with what 5200 or some other caulking? At a glance I can see that this will need to be addressed on this tank. Probably could make gaskets inner/outer from a inner tube but not sure on how snug the thru tank fitting threads will hold up to. Not a lot of thread to work with there. You mentioned that you did not use pvc glue in your fittings. Does off gasing into the water or something like that hurt minnows with glue/caulking? More questions later and thanks for input.
Thanks Ralo79 thanked you for this post

What air stones would you recomment?

The best stones to use are lava rocks. You can get like a 6 lbs bag from lowes for $10 or so. It's in the gril section. These rocks have holes in them which allows for more space for bacteria to grow. Take some of the lava rock and break it up and put a layer on the bottom of the tank. Be sure to rinse the lava rock off it has a lot of dust. Another good thing is to add some live plants to the tank. This will help with oxygen and removing waste that fish put off. Adding a few fish to a new tank is a good way to cycle faster. I've had a 60 gal fish tank with like 40 fish (like 5 different kinds) and only cleaned the tank once in 2 years. All I do is add water when needed.

Will keeping minnows in a submerged/sunken 40-gallon barrel, at the marina, work as well as maintaining a tank/filter system outside for one month?

Should be fine as long as the water temperatures are agreeable to the minnows
