    A Memorial Day to Remember

“Memorial Day” 2012 is just that for myself and my wife, it is a day that we soon won’t forget, and as time passes, it just keeps getting more special! That day started as many other typical days for my favorite fishing partner and me. We are very fortunate to live, (in my opinion) 25 minutes ...

My fishing partner and good friend Tommy Vaughn, the originator of the Rooty Tooty 309 crappie jig is bringing back a new and improved version of this iconic fishing lure. Tommy's late father Billy, one of the founding fathers of vertical jigging, honed his skills in the 50's at the newly formed Santee Cooper lakes located

TULSA, Okla. (Nov. 13, 2012) - The new Bobby Garland Slab Dockt'R, a large profile soft plastic crappie lure designed especially for dock shooting, is available and already catching on and catching fish. None of this should come as news to anglers familiar with Garland; the brand has a reputation for introducing artificial crappie baits that serve a purpose and deliver results.

Dock shooting is a process in which the lure is held in the hand and used to pull the rod back, ...

Got a PM from "sandwich maker" and he told me about his next fishing trip and asked if I was interested in joining him to fish for crappie. I seized the opportunity to meet one of our members and met him at the ramp at the end of White Rose Rd.

I'm doing a stretch here by posting a photo only because he did catch the

I planned my vacation this year to include the Super Slabfest, so I arrived at Lake Talquin Lodge on Thursday, Nov. 1. The weather was very nice for this time of the year with warm but comfortable temps in the afternoons and cool nights. I ...

About 6 years ago I got bit with the “crappie bug.” I remember the day like it was yesterday. My cousin and I had taken an early spring trip on Lake Murray in search of some elusive slabs. To be honest, I was very much a rookie at the time (and still am), but we had a game plan of sorts to try. Needless to say, our plan only resulted in one nice crappie, but the trip was very rewarding. We both watched in disbelief as several boats in the same ...

I began my “crappier fishing” 13 years ago when I moved to Mississippi. Growing up from 12 years old through my early 20’s I pond fished every day for bream and bass. As I got older and had the means I branched out into fly-fishing and the occasional trip to a lake to fish in a boat. That type of ...

It all started many years ago when families fished not only for enjoyment but to survive. One of my earlier memories was watching my Grandmother (Momma) and Papa go down to the creek with cane poles and dug up worms. They would catch fish, clean the fish (No Filleting back then) and then Momma would cook the fish for supper. This picture shows my Momma, Aunt Lillian, and me fishing in our favorite fishing hole.

Are you an observant fisherman? I think we would all like to answer YES to that question. You know some of the best fisherman I know are the one’s able from the night before to observe weather patterns, wind direction, and time of year to know the where, how, and when to put fish in the boat. But you know… it goes much deeper than that. I think allot of times guys

Researchers and biologists are always doing studies in order to learn more about what makes our fisheries work, and what at times causes short term problems. Here's a look at some recent research that pertains to our favorite fish, the crappie.

    Crappie Anglers: Poler or Troller?

Trolling May Intensify Exploitation in Crappie Fisheries”

If you're a crappie angler, chances are you're either a poler, a guy that fishes with a single outfit at a time like in bass fishing, or a troller, someone who has multiple lines out, often with multiple baits ...

Another transition between seasons has begun. Leaves are dropping fast. Your dog has a spring in his step. The cat is sprinting around the house in a moment of craziness. Deer prance across the front yard.

The animal planet goes wild this time of year. Fish get more active too. Fish leave deeper waters ...

I hear folks talking about down sizing baits almost daily on the forum. My home lake Nimrod maybe a fluke but I don't think so. So often folks think small when it comes to jigs or minnows for Crappie. I can't see why most folks are shocked when I show them the large 2'' Southern Pro umbrella tubes with a 1/8 oz lead head pushed inside. This gives ...

I never knew a company could provide a franchise (officially called a “licensor”) and not charge franchise fees or royalties, but that's exactly how Daylight Donuts operates. On a recent fishing trip to Oklahoma I visited the Daylight Donuts corporate office. I also ate like a ton of their great “not just for breakfast” donut treats.

I mention all this because I know that some of our members have had to switch careers lately, myself included. This is partly due to the stinking economy, anyway, I digress. This company offers “up Licenses” for such a low point of entry it even has me intrigued.

They provide you a “brand”, a protected territory, ingredients, training, consultation and advise, and never ask for a percentage of your sales or license fees. It really is a sweat deal.

Better yet. What are fish looking for? That would require us to think about what fish seek. We all know the theory “dark colors for dark conditions”. The other train of thought is “opaque colors in dark conditions” or “transparent colors in light conditions”. Set those theories aside a while.

Let us think like a fish for a few minutes. Okay, you are fish. You are swimming along just off the bottom. Your eyes ...
