    Default Long Lining

When I long line trolling I have 4 rods in the back and 1 on each side up front. Do you guys let extra line out on the 2 rods up front?

Is what you are asking .... that the two front/side rod's baits be ahead of the baits of the back rods or the extra line is meant to put those baits back among the baits of the four rear rods ??

Personally, I'd want the front rod's baits to be ahead of the rear rods baits ... as far as distance goes. And ALL baits to be covering at least a 3ft depth difference between all the rods out. It's basically how I do jig Pushing. My baits are not in a horizontal conga line the same distance behind the boat or all at the same depth. They're scattered in distance & depth, because a school of Crappie are not all going to be at exactly the same depth.

that makes perfect sense I usually put all rods with about 40 feet of line out. Perhaps that's why I don't catch much! Thanks again

I always keep the two front side baits ahead of the back ones. Less chance of getting tangled up that way. And as Crappie Pappy said I run them at different depths also. Atleast till I figure out the right depth for that day.

I run up to eight rods off the back of boat. Each side has four of different lengths. I think I cast them out the same distance most of time. I like them All close together and get action in turns and deliberate zig zags. I have only done 1/16 oz jigs single jig as doubles got tangled few times I tried. It’s bad enough when the singles get tangled. I’m from Illinois a lot of places have two pole limits.
I just got back from ky lake all crappie I caught in the week were long lined. And that was a few. I gave up and went to bass most of trip. Bass liked z man micro Trd and a homemade plastic worm in a rust color. My biggest fish was 17” smallie on the long line. It hit the right side of boat and ram into the four lines on the left side. I had fresh six point line the vicious brand in 2000 yard spool. Line was very cheap $8 at Walmart put pulled out of many snags
my go to slime line large spool has been out of Stock for years
my go too bait is southern pro hot grubs. Cheap good colors good action
the rods this trip were ugly stick carbon crappie models 7,8,9, and 10 foot. It took work to find and got from pure fishing directly. I also have southern crappie rods. They have similar action and are cheap
