    Default Fishing & Hunting License

Great reminder. It’s very easy to get caught up in life and forget to renew.

I have been checked 3 times in my life. They were always professional. I was following all the rules so they went their own way.

What’s the deal with Fire extinguishers? I haven’t seen anything about that yet.

Boaters - check your fire extinguisher.

There is a new federal regulation for boat owners. Beginning April 20, the new U.S. Coast Guard regulation for disposable fire extinguishers mandates a 12-year expiration date from the date of manufacture. Boaters can find the manufacture date stamped into the bottom of the bottle or near the UL label. This may be two or four digits — if it is two, as in 08, that means 2008.

Additionally, the new regulation also specifies the minimum Underwriter Laboratory (UL) classification of extinguishers to be carried aboard certain vessels — depending on the boat’s model year.

This is the result of phasing out older “B-I” and “B-II” labels for newer “5-B” “10-B” and “20-B” extinguisher classifications. The number in this new rating refers to the size in square feet of the potential fire the device is suitable to extinguish and not the exact weight of the dry chemical inside the bottle.

Vessels on the water today that are less than 26 feet and model year 2017 or older may continue to carry older, dated or undated “B-I” or “B-II” disposable extinguishers. However, when they are no longer serviceable or have reached 12 years of age since manufacture, they must be replaced with newer class “5-B” or greater extinguishers. Boats less than 26 feet and 2018 model year or newer must carry unexpired “5-B” “10-B” or “20-B” fire extinguishers. Having older “B-I” and “B-II” types do not meet the new carriage requirements.

Creel guy below Cordell Hull last summer. I was catching skipjack. He asked me how many I had caught. I told him I didn't know but it was way less than 100.

Used to get my creel checked at Taylorsville, now & then (a long time ago), but never anywhere else. Only time I've even seen a CO at Cedar Creek was back shortly after it opened for fishing. He didn't check me, as he was too busy checking the sticker on a guys runabout that he was about ready to launch. It was expired or he didn't have the boat number decals on the boat, or something along those lines, and he was told to take the boat back home. I've seen CO's on Cumberland, but most of the time they were chasing around looking for alcohol drinkers on the big boats. Got checked once at Cave Run, and right after he got done with me and started to pull away a guy on a Ski-doo was doing donuts around the no wake buoy (after Sundown). He pulled him over and was writing him up as I idled on down the bank & started fishing. Funny part of that was we both just shook our heads at the same time when the guy started doing the "donuts", not 50ft from where we were.

I have been checked 4 times on KY Lake (in a lifetime of fishing there), twice on Reelfoot, and once on Green River Lake (2 yrs ago) and twice on Lake Cumberland. Two quick stories about being checked: One of the times on Lake Cumberland, I was fishing one of the docks Lees Ford Marina on a cold, 25 degree winter's day. Needless to say, I was the only one around. I had 7 big crappie in a wire basket when I looked up to see a Wildlife Officer walking down the dock towards me. He checked my license and then my fish, and then said that the marina had been having some stuff being stolen off of boats at night and that he was just making sure I was supposed to be there. At that time, I had a pontoon boat there in a rented slip. I gave him my name and and my slip number and he called into the marina office and got it verified....and then left. I guess the marina had called him on me. THey probably couldn't fathom than anyone would be fishing on such a cold, grey day...but then they didn't know me. ha! ha! On another occasion, I was checked on Kentucky Lake a few years ago on Memorial Day weekend. I had a friend with me and we were fishing for bluegill in my boat. I looked up to see a boat approaching and mentioned to my friend, "Here comes two Game Wardens. I'm sure they are checking fishing licenses." When the officers pulled alongside my boat, I showed them my license, but my friend said, "I left mine in my wallet in the truck over there at the boat ramp." One of the officers politely said, "Go get it. WE'll wait." I thought that was very nice of him. So we motored over to the ramp, and my friend retrieved his license from the truck, only to find that his license was out of date. We went back out to where the officers were busily checking other boats. My friend explained his situation, and the officer who had been so polite said, "Wow! I can't believe you came back out here." But...he still wrote him a ticket for $65. However, before they left, he said to my friend, "We are going on down the lake and won't be back into this bay today. So if you want to go ahead and fish today, you may." As they boated away, I said, "Well, it's about 5 pm. You just want to call it a day." And my friend replied, "H--l NO! We are gonna fish till dark! This trip cost me $65!!!"

Got checked this afternoon when I returned back to the ramp. I was on Cumberland in Fishing Creek. He checked license, fish and safety equipment (PFD's, fire extinguisher, horn & throwable cushion).
Yes, as a matter of fact, I do have a retirement plan...FISHING!
