Thread: Regular Bluegill or Hybrid?

Hard to tell from a painted mount. Do you happen to have a picture of it when you caught it ??

Unfortunately no picture. I was pretty much flat broke working underground construction in 1986 and did not own a camera, and was considering cleaning this fish until the country butcher shop (in Payneville, KY) I took it to have weighed, persuaded me to have it mounted. I was convinced the fish would have been much easier to swallow, but got it mounted anyway and best I can recall the mount cost somewhere in the neighborhood of $65 - $85.00.

I was bass fishing a little creek small enough you could cast to the other bank. I tossed a full size spinner bait to the other bank and got hit like a ton of bricks. I reeled it in expecting a good size bass. No dice it was a good size Bluegill that had inhaled that spinnerbait. I unhooked it looked at it disappointed it wasn't a bass and tossed it back in. No measurements and no weight no photos. It was the biggest bluegill I had caught before or since. I regret thowing it back. I hope it remembers me from time to time like I remember it.

If it's painted close to how it actually looked when caught, then I'd think it was just a regular Bluegill (genetically). Even so, it's a wall worthy mount to be proud of

Looks like a redear that your taxidermist took some liberties with. Redear are much harder to paint than bluegill.

I had it weighed on a set of butcher scales so plus or minus it showed 2lb-14oz.
