If I wasn't going to be using a slip float, I'd use the same rod I'm currently using for casting jigs for Crappie : 6'6" ESP PowerLite (bobber stops don't work well with the micro guides on an ESP rod) Otherwise, if I were using a slip float, any of the dozen or so other spinning rods I have would work just fine IMHO. Other opinions may differ, but I don't think any special rod is "needed" for Ears & Gills.

I like the Ugly Stik GX2 in a 7’ ultra light. I have used on the redears at Barkley and the ‘gills here at home. You can cast the slip bobber setup a mile and stay back off the beds. Like Pappy, I also use my 6-6 crappie Maxx jig rod when I drop shot’em. 6lb year copoly line.

One of those long 12' or so crappie rods that spider riggers use. Bluegill aren't far enough away to use a big reel. Just toss a giant mealworm and hang on!

I’ve used a 7’ Rapala ultra-light rod and Shimano medium light rear drag reel for years. I don’t think Rapala rods are marketed in the US. I bought mine off Sportsman’s Guide years ago. Guess they bought a close-out. Wish I had a dozen of them. I also have an ultra light St.Croix 6.5 foot rod that works great.
The 6-9’ Southern Crappie Rods work great too. Love cork handles!

I had a nice Falcon 6.5' for many years that I loved. I broke the tip on it. Replaced it with a BnM 6.5 and it is not as sensitive but does the job. It has a small quantum spinning reel on it. Forget the model. Use it for casting slider grubs and drop shotting for bluegill. It will handle a bass or catfish as needed.

My setup for red ears and big bluegill is the same. I use a 10 or 11 ft B'M jig pole paired with a Pflueger President underspin real. It is a very high quality little reel. Better than anything I have found on the market. In fact, I use it on my crappie jigging poles as well. It is also super easy for my clients to use. I first came across them while fishing with a guide for trout over on the White River in Arkansas. He used them for his clients. Pflueger marketed them back then under the Cetina name, but since moving them to the President line has improved them tremendously.
