    Default Carp netting article

For those of you that get the Kentucky Afield Magazine (if you don't, you should) there is a 4 page article on the Modified Unified Method of Carp Netting. They posted some interesting photos of some of the mechanisms they used to move the carp into the nets.

Yep, read the article, Lots of good information, but in my mind VERY poor results for ALL the effort, but again, that's my opinion. The commercial guys can collect this amount in a few days if given the over $1/pound we paid for this exercise($500,000 cost to us). But, I did read, that this effort will soon ERADICATE ALL the Asian Carp in Barkley. This will be good news for all the people there who depend on getting this done. Hope it happens soon, did see it(Asian Carp stories) has severely hurt the businesses there.

jaycrappie, I agree, lots of work by our state, but don't think the Carp will be gone for a while. I fished last year at KY lake, Bluegill fishing. Found several nice beds in a big bay, caught some nice fish, but next day the Asian Carp were in the same Bay, jumping as I moved in NOTHING for Bluegill in the same area. I guess they run the fish out of the beds for a while. Just don't know for sure, but if this is true, then the bedding fish there will constantly have a problem getting a good spawn.

Just remember that harvesting carp was only part of the reason they did it. A big goal was just to try it out and learn how it worked. Hopefully they can take the lessons learned and come up with a better approach.

    Default Expensive Lesson

I am really concerned about the cost. As with any government involvement (project) all the money is used in the
engineering / design phase and there will be no money left to actually remove the carp. How many of these "learning" sessions will we go through before "sorry there is no more funding available." I wonder how much was spent flying- floating the government officials in to see this learning lesson.

Does the article make the claim that this method would eradicate the Asian Carp population in Barkley?

It really doesn't make any difference what it costs to cater to the politicians, as long as its their idea, you don't run out of money.

Could someone scan and post the article please? I don't get the magazine and it is not on fw.ky.gov.

My .02. You will likely only ever see carp netting and catching on this scale in KY and Barkley. KDFWR is not getting pushed to do anything about them in any other waterbody the way they are in those two lakes. The squeaky wheel gets the oil so to speak.

Redearhooser. On page 17, last paragraph of article, quote from Ron Brooks.: "We now have a closed system with the Bio Acoustic Fish Fence on Lake Barkley. We can eradicate Asian carp from Lake Barkley with such large quantities being removed from the lake." I took this 'eradicate' that they will be removed. I'm hoping eradicate means they will be gone shortly in Barkley. Maybe just wishful thinking on my part.
