Thread: Titling Boat from Ill. or Tenn?

I don't remember having any particular trouble when I boat mine from a guy in Tennessee.

If you're transferring ownership of a boat previously owned in a non-titling state, submit the boat's most recent registration certificate instead. The bill of sale. A photo or pencil tracing to verify your HIN.

Your clerks office has a form that you must have both seller and buyer fill out, sign, and have notarized. That was my experience when buying a boat from Tennessee.

What Bill said in the above post. I've bought two from TN without any problems but you need to get the proper form from the county court clerks office. Tell your local clerk what you are planning to do and they will help you, at least mine did. Never bought one from IL but I would ask your local clerk about that state too.

Thanks for all the information. I'm considering another boat for next year, and because I will be looking for a particular style boat I'm trying to broaden the search area.

Transferred one from TN when I moved back to KY and no issues. Bought one last year from IL and no real issues but the state office that handled boat titles took about 4 week's longer than it should of.

If you are a Ky resident and purchase a TN boat, you need
Bill of origin for the boat motor and trailer, Plus the owners TN ID card,
plus, This became mandatory sometime in Nov." a Notarized bill of sale
from the seller". Once you get all that approved by a clerk (a miracle)
Then Its submitted to Frankfort for titles.

I made 5 trips to the court house before I got all the I's dotted and the Ts crossed.

I've never heard of a "Bill of Origin" . When you buy a new vehicle you get a "Certificate of Origin" but the state normally takes that when you register the vehicle. When I start looking I think I will limit my searches to dealers who take care of all the paperwork.
