Default Suggestions, Winter fishing in KY

I have about 3 weeks of time off to use before the end of the year or loose it(I work too much). I'm trying to figure out where to go for at least 1 week at a KY/Barkley lake before Jan 1. I love Barkley, KY lakes, but I WILL not be bringing a boat. So, any advice knowing this, where to fish in December, below the dams or any other place on the lakes bank fishing. I guess Barkley is messed up with the Asian Carp stuff for fishing below the dam. So, need help for what type of fish I might be able to catch during this time. I prefer panfish, Bluegill, Yellow Perch, Yellow Bass, Crappie, but would switch my equipment to catfish if this is what I could only catch. I know some of you fish in the winter, any help would be appreciated.

Sauger fishing can be good below the Ohio river dams. Magic time is hour before dark to shortly after.

Check out the circular area up against KY Dam on the west bank. You can access it down by the campground below the dam. I've seen good fall crappie and sauger fishing from the west bank. Don't pass up the area they used to call the boat basin. It's between the ramp and the dam on west side. My Dad used to catch some good crappie off the breakwater at KY dam Marina. Access is below the lodge.

They've closed the best fishing on the west side of Barkley Dam for the BAFF system.

M R and Kycreek, thanks for the replies. I was pretty sure I could catch some crappie below Barkley, but the best spot is now off limits due to the Barriers they have now. I think the East side of Barkley dam has too much current to catch much. I will look into the KY Dam area and hopefully find some fish. I plan to look at weather forecast as see if there is some decent weather for a few days to fish in December. M R, just a question, do you guide any in December? I may come down a couple days for 2 days of fishing with you if I can get my brother to come with me. I know I may have to bring a 'cold suit' if I set a date, but don't know if you go out in the winter. We can 'bank' fish the other days.

This is the first year in the last 4 I'll be able to fish all winter, Lord willing.

M R, Ok, will talk with my brother and see if he in interested for a trip or two in December. He really enjoyed our trip this spring. Again, I will do and outlook on the weather to see
if would be possible for the dates I can choose based on your calendar. I'm not fishing when below freezing temps. May be a last minute request, but again, I need to make sure the weather is not terrible.

How about a FINS lake? They're stocking trout now.

Mike Miller Park at Draffenville has a FINS lake that is stocked with trout if the A Team hasn’t caught them all.

If it doesn't work out below the dams, the place I used to bank fish as a kid is nearby, I used to wear the crappie out in there but I haven't been in probably 15 years. At one time the crappie were so thick in there that my buddies and I would have "tournaments" after school and each of us would have 50+ before it got dark. Who knows what it's like now. Definitely a pretty place and easy to walk around, and with 3 bodies of water it's a lot to cover in a short time.

There's also all of LBL to explore/fish, as well as the canal.

deathb4disco and anyone who cares, yep, we have two fin lakes here in Georgetown. The trouble is that they cannot match the stocking schedule. They said they stocked the Lusby Lake on the 21st, but did not. I work at home and go out at lunch and check on the fishing at the lakes. Sad, people pile in based on the posted stocking schedule and fish for hours and there are no trout stocked per anyone's knowledge, and as you know, there are NO trout in the lake after the summer heat if they didn't stock the trout. I'm sure there will be the normal 'spin' on why they weren't stocked as scheduled. Just which the guys would accurately document what they do and do what they document on the website, simple as that. Too dang many spins/excuses these days that people accept. But, IF and when they stock some trout in these two lakes near me, I will give it a try if the weather is manageable.
