I would speculate that it's how they are in a school of their own kind from the moment they hatch.
Fish such as crappie school together. But how do they know they are with a like species? They don’t have mirrors or necks to see themselves. There’s no way they know what they look like.
If a crappie fry was put with bass fry would it relate to them??

My only guess would be that they grew up in a school of fish .... knowing what all the others looked like .... so they wouldn't really have to know what THEY looked like. They have no idea what species they are. They live by instinct, which tells them to feed, breed, & survive. The fact that they do, sometimes, crossbreed with other Crappie species, but not with other Panfish species tells me they instinctively know their gender & function and not to attempt breeding outside of their species group.
