Default How does a crappie know it’s a crappie?

Fish such as crappie school together. But how do they know they are with a like species? They don’t have mirrors or necks to see themselves. There’s no way they know what they look like.
If a crappie fry was put with bass fry would it relate to them??
I know, it’s silly. Just been pondering on this lol

I would speculate that it's how they are in a school of their own kind from the moment they hatch.

Greenfish, have you been sitting in the deer stand to long thinking and need to get back to fishing like me?

Surely schools of fish gain and lose members. They have to have a way to find each other

My only guess would be that they grew up in a school of fish .... knowing what all the others looked like .... so they wouldn't really have to know what THEY looked like. They have no idea what species they are. They live by instinct, which tells them to feed, breed, & survive. The fact that they do, sometimes, crossbreed with other Crappie species, but not with other Panfish species tells me they instinctively know their gender & function and not to attempt breeding outside of their species group.

Crappies are smart, they spend most of their life in school.
