    Default Taylorsville or Cave Run

Ok, summertime. I need opinions on which lake would be the best to catch some decent Bluegill/Crappie in the 'Timber' areas of either lake. I usually head out with minnows and wax worms. I try the crappie for a while, if no luck, I switch to Bluegill fishing, hoping to catch something over 6". The standing/broke off timber seems to be good during the summer at Taylorsville for Bluegill during the summer season. Don't know about Cave Run, not been there for 20 years, but I think there are still some standing timber areas in the lake. So, if you wanted to try Crappie/Bluegill fishing, which lake would you head for?. I know the weekends are basically out of the question, due the boat traffic and congestion at every ramp, but would go during Mon-Friday. I fish either with slip bobbers or drop shot rig over the side of the boat.

PJ .... you're probably gonna have to wait just a little while before fishing Taylorsville (it's currently 11ft over Summer Pool & rising).

Cave Run is 4.7ft above Summer Pool (& falling).

That being said ... you might consider trying in the creeks on Herrington Lake ... around standing timber, deep points, or rock cliff ledges.

Pappy, thanks for the reply and advice. I haven't been to Herrington for a while either, (I spent 12 years in SC recently). I fished the 'Bryant's Camp' area years ago looking for the floating 'tires' around docks that they used to break the wakes of the boats and just killed the Bluegill around these things. I may have been in 75' of water, but the bluegill would be hanging around these 'tires' tied up around the docks. I would take a pop-eye/waxworm, cast it near the 'tires' and watch the Bluegill come out and get the bait from the tires(2-3 ft deep). So, thanks for reminding of this. If I can't find the 'tire' pattern(maybe no one is using these now), I'll try the creeks and rock cliffs. Herrington used to have some nice Bluegill and some hard to find nice sized Crappie. If I go to Herrington, will let you know. Also, found out that a person that lives at Corinth Lake read 'our' posts on the Crappie fishing at the dock. I went there this past Saturday,(caught a few Crappie/Bluegill) the lady fishing there said her boyfriend saw our discussion and she said she has caught her limit of 20 crappie off the dock in the location we talked about in our discussion for the last few days. So, this 'hole' is going to be fished out for while. (She can walk to the dock).

PJ ... the only "tire breakwater line" I remember fishing around was on the dock next to Kennedy Bridge, that was affectionately known locally as "The Ghetto" (which burned down recently). But, then I haven't really fished the Bryant's Camp end of the lake much.

As a kid, fishing with my Grandparents, Red Gate Marina was our starting point .... and Red Gate Creek & McKetchnie Branch were our normal areas of concentration. Also the "Drift Pile" ... which is the corner pocket to the far right as you come out of Red Gate Creek. That corner gathers floating timber/trash into a single spot, and used to be one of our more favored Crappie spots for fishing at night under a Coleman gas lantern. Our favorite Bluegill spot was the last point on the right, before the main lake point at the mouth of Red Gate Creek (coming out of Red Gate Creek from the marina). And we fished deep (like 12-15ft deep) and just off the bottom at that point. Caught mostly Bluegill & Redear, and occasionally a small Bass or Catfish. We used Crickets & Horseweed Worms (Common Stalk Borer larvae) most of the time, but Redworms, pieces of Nightcrawler, Wax Worms, or Meal Worms would work just fine.

As for Corinth ... those Crappie don't stay next to that dock all the time, so they have to be roaming out in the lake most of the time. That tells me that longline trolling or Pushing small jigs and/or Roadrunners out in the lake might be an alternate way of catching them. And who knows what else one may end up with on the end of their line.

Pappy, thanks for the info. The place I found the tires years ago was just past Kings Mill heading toward the dam. There were about 10 private docks that put the string of 'tires' out from their docks (about 75-100 feet out)to cut down on the wakes. I just looked at a shot from google maps(satellite view) and it looks like they are not there now. So, I have always liked Herrington in my younger days for pan fishing. If I can get a 'partner' to head there, I'll give it a try. My brother went with me to KY lake this spring and enjoyed some Bluegill/Shellcracker fishing( he has never fished much). Will see if I can get him to go with me and we can check out Herrington, Cave Run, or Taylorsville this summer.
