    Default Cave Run newbie

My buddies daughter just moved to Lexington and we plan on fishing Cave Run when we go down for a visit. Which launch would be quickest to get to and closest to the sunken structure? We would probably be coming down April/May or September/October so info on fish locations during these time periods would be helpful, too. I've read the archived posts and sort of have a game plan but you can never have too much information. Thanks.

Sparty ..... check this out --> Cave Run Lake Fish Attractors - Google My Maps

The habitat icon pictures are explained in the left margin, as to what type of habitat cover is placed there. Click on one of those icons & the GPS coord's (3 versions) appear in the left margin.

I've always used the Alfrey Ramp, for the most part, but have launched at the Scott's Creek Marina ramp.

It's a pretty straight forward 1.5hr drive from Lex. -- East on I64 to 801 which runs along the North side of the lake. The Alfrey Ramp is just down 801 from the Scott's Creek Marina. You turn onto the Twin Knobs Campground road, then take the road to the left to the Alfrey Ramp. The Twin Knobs Campground ramp is for the campers. There is a launch/parking fee of $5.00, and there should be a station near the bathrooms in the parking lot where you can get an envelope/tag.

IMHO ... if it's April/May, you're talking pre-spawn to spawn period, so I'd look at offshore cover that's near the mouths of creeks on the North banks and work my way back into those creeks.
If it's Sept/Oct ... I won't be of much help, as I've not fished the lake during that period enough to offer any suggestions.

I also suggest you contact LittleJohn for more comprehensive info/help.

Thanks for the reply. I noticed you and Little John both fish the lake and was pleased you gave us some good information. As far as when we come down, that's just a guess. It could be any time except in the heat of summer or dead of winter and will be worked in around our November and March trips to D'arbonne. I'll check out that link now and hopefully, some day, we can hook up out on Cave Run (or Taylorsville).

Here's another website that you may want to keep watch on if/when you decide to come down this way & fish our lakes : Louisville District Daily Lake Report

You need only to click on the "Today's Pool Feet" number (highlighted) across from the particular lake, and you'll be taken to a chart showing the water levels over the previous year. Like this one from Cave Run :

And as you can see .... had your trip been "pre-planned" for the April/May time frame, then May would have been your best shot at any decent water conditions, as the whole month of April was plagued with fast falling water levels. Taylorsville Lake was in a similar situation during that time frame.

I also use this site as a reference to the COE site link above: Lake Levels in Kentucky, United States ... as it shows water levels more than once a day, and I can determine (by comparing the two) if the lake is rising or falling in relation to the COE chart levels (which are usually updated in the early AM and only that one time, that day).

Wish I could help more but I know very little about Cave Run crappie fishing. It's about a 1.5 hour from me too. What few times I've been there we launched out of Scott's creek. It's been several years since then & we were bass fishing anyhow. I have a few friends that crappie fish around the marina successfully. Fall fishing in our area can be the most consistent time of the year. You guys might get into a big Musky there. We used to scuba dive there back in the day.
