    Default Trolling Guist Creek

My wife and I went to Guist for about 6 hours yesterday. We trolled cranks for 5 hours. Only one big one but have enough for a couple fish frys. We caught several yellow bass, a few whites, a couple crappie and then we tried fishing the beds for some sunfish. In all, we caught close to 50 fish, I threw probably 15 green sunfish in the neighbors pond and cleaned 35. Not a bad day and the weather was perfect.

Dayz .... I sure hope your neighbor WANTS Green Sunfish in his pond, though I don't know why he would. Well, maybe if he has some big Flathead Catfish in the pond & wants to feed them.

The pond is currently stunted with small large mouths and small blue gills. We are trying to get them all fatter. I will research before I put in more greens. What about crappie, are they bad for small ponds?

From what I've read, Crappie are not a good stock fish for ponds less than 50 acres. Though, there are some that say even that's too small. Black Crappie are better than White Crappie for stock fish. And, of course, there's always someone's little pond that produces Slab Crappie.

I'm not sure that introducing Green Sunfish into a pond full of stunted fish is going to do much to solve the problem. And it may worsen the problem ?? I'd contact the KDFWR and see what they suggest.

If it’s a smaller pond what you need to do is start catching those stunted fish out. Eat them give them away or fertilize plants with them. It sounds like it’s over populated to the point no amount of bate will help.

Exactly! I read an article in the latest KY Afield magazine telling this. There's a certain number of fish/species per acre that must come out each year. It also said that crappie is not encouraged as they are hard to control with their prolific breeding capability. It also said that transporting fish from one body of water to another is a terrible idea as there is great risk in introducing disease and other things into a pond that didn't previously exist and can cause major issues...some diseases in a huge lake that aren't noticeable can be a huge problem in a small pond.
