Default Carp nets in Jonathan Creek

As much as I support the commercial fishermen and their efforts to kill the last Asian carp, I was an unhappy camper today when my trolling motor tangled in a net. There was a low-profile marker like bass fishermen use that was no more than 6 inches square about 40 feet from the bank. I looked all over for another marker on the deep side but found none. I was at least 50 yards from the bank in 10 feet of water when I heard myTerrova hit it. I shut it off and was
able to untangle. No damage to either party.

I saw the second one on side scan just before it ate 4 jig rigs. The markers were the same.

This is ridiculous. I can imagine lots of folks aren’t going to be as understanding. Mark the nets!! period!!

Hopefully the new regulations will pass and the new flags will be required starting later this year.

Wade White of Lyon Co posted a video the other day of the new flags. Here's a picture from it:

I know if I were the owner of those nets, I would definitely be marking with the flags! Those nets aren't cheap!

I ran through one about 3 years ago in the dark at 5 am, I had headlights/spotlight on and actually saw the tiny markers and was able to shut down in time to coast over it, the boat behind me wasn't running lights and tore it all to heck wide open.

I just got a call from Jessica at KY F&W. She is on it.

When I went to load my boat at Sportsman's, they told me somebody staying there had gotten their outboard tangled in one this morning and the rescue boat from Sportsman's had to go out to help. Probably the same net and after my mishap.

This is a bad start to the relationship of spring crappie fishermen to netters.

A netter at the F&W meeting at Eddyville Thursday night said to not slow down if you realize a net is in your path. Much less damage to the net and boat at high speed. Probably zero prop damage.

They were netting pretty hard in West Sandy weekend before last, I seen them checking nets so I went in the opposite direction out to Big Sandy. 5 hours later I came back to the dock and dropped my passenger off to get the truck. I am waiting at the ramp about 50 yards out and did a circle to line up and just happen to see the old styrofoam marker 25 yards or so from me.
I had already ran over the top of the net and had no idea but luckily never touched it!!
The foam looked like a piece from underneath an old dock or something.......black, stained and blended VERY well with the water. It was only about 6-8 inches square and looked to be 3-4 inches thick.
I like the flag idea and hope they make it mandatory!!

Yep, sounds like a problem for this spring trying to troll cranks, push/pull jigs and long lining for crappie unless you can find these nets ahead of time as bad as it seems how they are currently marked in the previous posts. This will probably get fixed, but again, it's like pushing a rope until it gets fixed. Hopefully the nice looking marker flags are not real expensive if eventually the commercial fishermen have to purchase these for use to continue their operations. If not, most will get 'borrowed' to mark their nets unless there is a way to permanently identify the original purchaser of these markers. But, I'm sure a solution will be found.
