Yes I was thinking the same thing. I have a pretty flexible schedule and can usually get away whenever I need. Green is definitively a lake I want to check out. We are not bass fisherman. Mainly panfish, and we also like to catfish. We just like to fish. My wife and I spent our honeymoon on Bullshoals Lake many many years ago. She likes fishing as much (probably more) than I do. All of our vacations and trips pretty much evolve around fishing.
We are not looking for a fancy house or a big house. We want a small house or a trailer. We don't want to spend our time cleaning and maintaining a large house. We are not fancy people.
I looked at a couple of the resorts at Green. What can you tell me about the one with the floating cabins? And I assume the one where the fling is happening is good?

The site of the Spring Fling is Holmes Bend Marina Resort : Holmes Bend Marina Resort - Houseboating on Green River Lake in Kentucky Houseboats (> river end of the lake)
The "floating cabins" are at Green River Marina : Floating Cabins – Green River Marina (> dam end of lake)

Green River Lake is a good lake for "numbers" of keeper Crappie (9" @ 20/day/person) ... and also has Muskie (2 species), Walleye, White Bass, and the regular catfish & panfish population.

There are two Crappie guides that I know of at Green : t.slabseeker (Tim Marple) & KyTeacher (David Jones)

You can get a good idea of the layout of the lake, facilities on & around the lake, and surrounding towns by going on Google Maps or Google Earth .... the lake is located in South Central KY.

There are two very good hospitals in the area : Taylor Regional Hosp. in Campbellsville & Ephraim Mcdowell Regional Med Center in Danville (about 40mi NE of Campbellsville) .... or there's Lake Cumberland Regional Hosp. in Somerset (about 45mi East of Columbia).

Not meaning to jinx you, just reassure you that they're available & close.

(I worked at the UK Med Center Hospital for 45yrs and never had any illnesses or injuries that warranted me becoming a patient .... then retired almost 6yrs ago & ended up being a patient twice, a little over 1yr after retiring. Stuff happens, and I just didn't want you to come into this "move" unprepared.)

As far as the resorts/marinas .... I've stayed quite a few times at Holmes Bend, and I've camped at the State Campground (long ago), but I haven't stayed in the floating cabins.

And just a FYI .... if you intend to stay in a cabin/suite room for the Fling, there is a two night minimum on weekends (& the smallest cabin is a 2br). Now, the Kamper Kabins are basically 1rm sleeping quarters only, but there is no minimum stay requirement on them. There is also a campground just up the road from Holmes Bend Marina, but it is not affiliated with the marina. The COE owns the launch ramp at Holmes Bend & there's a $5 launch fee. But, you can get a Annual Pass for $40 & launch free at all of the COE launch sites. Or simply use the other launch sites on Green, that do not charge a launch fee (like the one at the State Campground).

Oh, and not that it would matter much to a retiree, but the lake is somewhat divided by two counties ... and those two counties are in different time zones. Just another FYI that I mention to people coming to the Fling, because some phone clocks will change their time when you cross the time zone line ... and "could" cause one to come in from fishing early or late.
The Campbellsville (dam & main lake area) end of the lake is in Taylor County & on Eastern Standard Time ... the Columbia (river/Holmes Bend area) end of the lake is in Adair County & on Central Standard Time. The time zone line basically divides the lake in half ... crossing the lake around Butler Creek (about halfway between the dam & Holmes Bend Marina).

Tim and KyTeacher are both excellent guides and fun to fish with I'd say. I always see them in the parking lot with fish at Holmes Bend. That's favorite end of the lake.

One thing to think about
at ky lake if they don’t get a handle on the carp problem I’m willing to bet they are going to see a pretty good drop in property value. That could work for you or against you depending on your circumstance

After five years of living in Eastern Kentucky because of my job, I recently retired. My wife and I all along had planned to move back to Western Kentucky where we used to live. I know Kentucky and Barkley lakes very well having fished them most of my adult life. But, honestly, after assessing the Asian Carp problem and talking with many friends who live and fish there on those lakes about it, we decided to remain in the Somerset, KY area. From where I live on Lake Cumberland, I can easily fish Lake Cumberland, Dale Hollow, Green River and Cedar Creek Lakes. With 5 years of fishing here on these lakes, I have grown to love all of them. Green River is great for numbers of fish, Cumberland offers quality crappie that rival Kentucky and Barkley Lakes, and Dale Hollow holds some of the biggest crappie you'll find anywhere, not to mention some of the largest bluegill and Redear and powerful Smallmouth Bass. In addition, Dale Hollow one of the cleanest lakes I've seen. Crappie fishing on Cedar Creek Lake is hit and miss for me, but then I don't go there as often as I do these other three lakes. Another plus for me is the trout fishing in the Cumberland River below Wolf Creek Dam. Somerset is a nice, growing town of about 14,000 people and offers just about everything we need. Plus Lexington is not far away. So we love it here and have decided to put down our roots and stay here, unless God has other plans for us.

Crappie&shrooms, I agree with Kyfishman. Somerset would be a good 'home' base for fishing with several other nice lakes within 2 hour drive or less. I do have a trip planned again for KY lake this spring. It may be my last based on what people I know live there tell me about the fishing since I was last there and what I run into during the trip, it may be fine, just don't know. Just don't want to deal with the a bunch of Carp and hope I don't have to. The KY/Barkley lake area is or has been great for fishing over the years, but this Carp thing may become a big problem. So, Somerset is a beautiful area. Spend most of my fishing there in or near Pitman Creek and did pretty good on Crappie years ago. Huge lake, very nice people in the area.
