    Default When is too cold?

Just curious about the crappie bit this time of year, I have enough clothes to stay warm regardless, but at what water temp do you think the crappie bite slows considerably? I have always hunted hard in cold weather but I have considered fishing some more this fall and winter. Thanks in advance for the replies. God Bless

Not sure what the water temps were, but I've stood on the bank & fished over a large blowdown at Taylorsville in Dec & Jan and caught Crappie. Daytime temps were in the low 30's when I got there (little after sunup) and probably/maybe got to around 40deg at best by midday. Now, this was a long time ago & back when I didn't have a boat .... and that tree is no longer there. Most fish came from about 8ft deep & about midway of the tree, but I did catch several (on one occasion) right at the shoreline next to the base of the tree in less than 4fow. The only time I didn't catch anything was when the surface was covered in ice about 30ft out from that shoreline.

If you can get on the water and find them, they will bite no matter what the temps are. We ice fish up here and catch plenty. So cold out that they freeze within minutes of pulling them thru the hole. They’ll feed all winter.

    Colder the better!
Don’t know anything about hard water. Chaunc would be the authority on that.
They bite better the colder the water gets, here in Oklahoma.

When it is winter time cold go to the deepest part of the lake and fish will be near the bottom.
FISHING, no better way to spend the day!

Before I dedicated my winter months to waterfowl guiding, I marked Thanksgiving on the calendar as our start of some of the best crappie fishing of the year. I always started my search on drops from medium depth flats into deeper channels. Nobody had ever heard of spider rigging then so we vertical jigged brush on the drops or if I could find them on my Lowrance 1510C paper graph, we would cast minnows hooked thru the head and rigged on a drop shot style rig. We’d never heard of drop shot then either. We would anchor on the edge of the flat, cast into the deeper channel, then hop the minnow rig up the drop. The bite was rarely any more than weight on the line and the hook set was just sweeping the rod to the side.

Nothing better than cold water crappie unless it’s cold water sauger.

I agree with what others are saying. I always find that December, January and February are the best months of the year for crappie, especially big crappie. I often hear fishermen talk of "Winterizing" their boat until Spring, but I've never winterized my boat. I use it all year round. I love wintertime crappie fishing---used to do it on Barkley and Kentucky Lake, now I since I live in Somerset, KY I do it on Green River Lake, Lake Cumberland, and Dale Hollow. I love it for the quality of fish and the reduced boat traffic and fishing pressure.
