I talked with a Tennessee Wildlife commissioner just this morning and ask him how they stood on the carp situation he said the main two fields that they were looking at was one sounding devices at all locks which he said was pretty expensive and expensive to operate, the other was to help Market carp fish for commercial fishermen to profit, he thinks this would help the situation, small talk no action.

Then the question would be what to restock? Would you have to compensate businesses directly dependent on the lake for income (and would have to set criteria for that)? The list can go on infinitely with problems and concerns for total genocide.
But...could someone please stock with some of the Grenada bloodlines should that happen legislation to fight carp invasion

Sound barriers are a band-aid at best. (and what about the lakes that are already affected)
Lowering lakes & using rotenone is futile, since the Ohio/Mississippi River complex would be unaffected, and the carp would simply return to the lakes they've already invaded.

Also, killing ALL the carp would shut down the newly created processing plants ... and it would take a few years before the commercial netters would have a viable crop of rough fish to market. And the use of chemical or biological agents would probably render the carp "unfit" for consumption, again causing problems for the processing plants & commercial netters.

Bighead Carp live for around 9yrs
Silver Carp live for around 20yrs

Neither can reproduce in a body of water without current, but shutting down the locks would create an economic problem that may be more costly than the country can afford.

I see no easy solution to this problem, if there even IS one.

The 800 pound gorilla in the room that we are only whispering about is, THE GAMEFISH ARE DISAPPEARING!! Unless something amazingly effective is done, might as well rename the lake "China Wastewater"

I dont think anyone would cry too much if the virus killed every carp in North America

OK guys .... let's keep this thread as non-political as we can, and focus on the subject of ridding ourselves of this Asian Carp scourge (rather than our feelings about the legislators).

When the entire Cumberland River/Tennessee River system is full of these things, maybe they'll drain the whole thing down!! That's what this is coming to...Pickwick is full of AC right now. After that it's Wilson, Wheeler, Guntersville and Nickajack.

11 million dollars won't touch this problem, 100 million and we're dancing...The trickle down affect is what scares me. Once people quit coming here to fish, there's going to be one heck of a trickle down influence on this entire area. Draffenville, Grand Rivers, Kuttawa, Eddyville, Benton and some other communities around here that depend on that out of town dollar, will be hurting. The price of real estate could unfortunately slide, too.

I'm in it for the long haul, so it won't hurt me as bad as someone who can't stomach the long haul. That said, they need to get the per pound price of AC at a realistic price to make it reasonable to fish them on the commercial side of the market.

I decided last week to move my boat off Kentucky Lake and will fish JPP or other lakes that are carp free. I'm 65 and don't expect any fix in my life time so I moved. Really hated it but after 24 years on the river I don't see a winning solution anytime soon. As more people move and the economy gets worse in the area maybe they will get moving. Wishful thinking.
